Barnsley v Palace

Oakwell, Tuesday 7.45pm

Barnsley

Barnsley

Team news

Barnsley are sitting in a very dangerous position, just 19th in the league and only five points away from the relegation zone, things are certainly not looking good for the Tykes.

Barnsley manager Steve Parkin's only injury real doubt for Tuesday’s game is that of midfielder Alex Neil, who was forced to miss the Yorkshire club’s last game against Coventry through injury.

Darren Barnard has been hit by a bout of flu however, he is unlikely to be forced out of the starting line up.

Meanwhile, Janne Salli and Steve Hayward are both still out with knee injuries and will certainly not feature. Another absentee is Leo Bertos who is suffering from glandular fever.

Trevor Francis will once again have to think hard about what formation to pick to face Barnsley with many key players doubtful for the trip north.

Tony Popovic and Kit Symons are still both out with groin injuries however the Aussie defender is said to be recovering well, while Symons's injury is more injury serious than first thought.

With Shaun Murphy returning to the starting line-up, either transfer-listed Gregg Berhalter or Dean Austin will have to be relegated to the subs' bench.

Top scorers Dougie Freedman and Clinton Morrison are both serious doubts. Freedman missed Saturday's game against Sheffield United due to the "flu", although reports say that the Scottish international has had a training ground bust up with Francis. And Morrison is suffering from a shoulder injury which, if proved to be serious, could keep him out for a while.

This could mean that Ade Akinbiyi will be partnered by American Jovan Kirovski up front, with Francis reverting to a 4-4-2 formation, with Aki Riihilahti returning to the central midfield having served his one-match ban last weekend.

One to watch

Darren Barnard

Barnsley's top scorer

Sheron - 11 goals

Barnsley's bad boy

Lumsdon - 9 0

Palace old boys

Fat Boy Miller, Dyer

The former Bristol City wing back has become a firm favourite at Oakwell following his tranfer from Ashton Gate. Deadly on set pieces and a scorer of more than a few stunning long range shots, Barnard is a threat around the area. Not only does he pack a punch going forward, he is a more than able defender who is good in the tackle. He is the link man to the majoirty of the Tykes' attacks and is the man to watch for this Tuesday.
