Crystal Palace secured their passage to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a 3-0 win at West Bromwich Albion.

Andros Townsend scored two brilliant goals either side of good strike by Patrick van Aanholt as Palace made light work of the Championship side.

Manager Roy Hodgson made eight changes from the team that drew with Newcastle in the Premier League on Saturday and his new-look XI were dominant throughout.

Townsend got the Eagles off to a fantastic start by firing in an early contender for goal of the season with just six minutes gone on the clock.

The winger collected the ball from inside his own half and carried it 30 yards from goal before unleashing a rocket into the back of the net for his first goal of the campaign.

Palace had a setback when Jairo Riedewald – playing at centre half – had to hobble off with a leg injury on 21 minutes.

Though Vicente Guaita kept out a James Morrison effort with a quality reaction save, Palace piled on the pressure with attempts from Jeffrey Schlupp and Alexander Sorloth.

Townsend almost added a second goal but his deft chip to the back post was headed off the line by Baggies defender Ahmed Hegazi.

Home stopper Boaz Myhill denied Schlupp with a decent block after the break, but Palace finally got the crucial second goal they deserved on 76 minutes through Van Aanholt who fired home a fierce right-foot shot from just inside the area.

Nine minutes from time, Townsend made it 3-0 by slaloming into the penalty box and smashed his shot into the corner of the net, giving Myhill no chance.

Max Meyer and substitute Jordan Ayew almost added a fourth of the night but Myhill kept the score down.

West Brom: Myhill, Mears (Edwards 63), Adarabioyo, Hegazi (Howkins 63), Field, Barry (Brunt 63), Harper, Townsend, Hoolahan, Morrison, Robson-Kanu.

Not used: Bond, Burke, Leko, Gayle.

Palace: Guaita, Ward, Kelly, Riedewald (Wan-Bissaka 21), Van Aanholt (Souare 80), Puncheon, Meyer, Kouyate, Townsend (Ayew 85), Schlupp, Sorloth.

Not used: Speroni, Woods, Williams, Kaikai.
