Wayne Hennessey made a series of good saves

Crystal Palace slipped into the relegation zone after a 1-0 defeat at home to Everton.

Manager Sam Allardyce has yet to pick up his first league win as the Eagles are defeated again and look in real danger of going down.

They were denied by the crossbar after eight minutes as James McArthur's left-wing cross was met by Christian Benkete who agonisingly headed onto the woodwork.

Everton grew into the game as Ross Barkley fired over and Wayne Hennessey beat out Kevin Mirallas' strong shot, before the Palace keeper palmed away Barkley's curled strike.

Barkley had the ball in the Eagles' net but it was ruled out for offside and Hennessey was called into yet action again, this time making a top save to deny Ramiro Funes Mori.

After the break, the dangerous Barkley fired two decent attempts on goal and Romelu Lukaku nodded over as the Toffees went in search of a breakthrough.

Everton stopper Joel Robles kept his side in the game with an outstanding diving save to claw away Scott Dann's header from a free-kick.

But Palace conceded yet another late goal – this time with just three minutes to go – after being down to 10 men with Jeffrey Schlupp off the pitch with an injury. Tom Davies found Seamas Coleman and the right-back smashed past Hennessey.

Palace: Hennessey, Tomkins, Dann, Delaney, Ward, Cabaye (Ledley 72), Puncheon, McArthur, Schlupp (Townsend 88), Remy (Lee 61), Benteke.

Not used: Speroni, Kelly, Flamini, Kaikai.

Everton: Robles, Holgate, Funes Mori, Williams, Coleman, Davies, Barry (Schneiderlin 59), Barkley (Jagielka 90), Mirallas (Lookman 72), Lukaku.

Not used: Stekelenberg, Oviedo, McCarthy, Valencia.
