Team news

Crystal Palace striker Marouane Chamakh is doubtful due to his hamstring injury. Recent signing Zeki Fryers could make his first start of the season at left-back.

Newcastle keeper Tim Krul, midfielder Yoan Gouffran and striker Papiss Cisse are struggling with a virus that has hit the squad.

Defender Davide Santon (knee), midfielders Siem de Jong (thigh) and Rolando Aarons (hamstring), and striker Adam Campbell (hernia) are all sidelined.

Quotes

Roy Hodgson

"We're not [looking to win] this cup. It’s a bit early for us. I’ve been there three games and I haven’t seen seven or eight players perform yet, so I’ve got to give them a chance to play. It will mean a lot to Alan, they are fighting on all fronts up there."

Julian Speroni

"We want to do well in the cup competitions. It’s something we spoke about before the season started, to have a nice run.

"Even the fans will tell you what they would prefer and they’d say the Premier League is priority, but we want to win this game.

"We have a big squad and have good, good players who can come into the team. We need that, not just 11 players so we can rotate and give opportunities to others. Now there is a good balance and I’m looking forward to what’s coming for us."

Fraizer Campbell

"There are few lads who haven’t played who have been brilliant for us, so hopefully we can rotate the squad a bit and they can get some minutes they deserve.

"This league is incredible – all the games are must-win. Leicester [who come to Palace on Saturday] will be on a high after beating Man United 5-3 at home so it will be tough for us next weekend, even after beating Everton."
