Ten-man Crystal Palace exited the Carling Cup after a dramatic penalty shoot-out defeat at Portsmouth.

The match was forced into extra-time with the scores locked at 1-1 and the Eagles a man down after Wilfried Zaha was sent off for an off-the-ball challenge in the 86th minute.

Palace held on for the extra 30 minutes but were defeated on spot-kicks with Pompey's Richard Hughes netting the decisive goal.

New signing Edgar Davids made his eagerly-awaited Palace debut in the left-back role after finally gaining international clearance.

The away side dominated the first half with the pacey Zaha causing all sorts of trouble on the right but debutant Pablo Counago and Andy Dorman wasted two glorious chances to put Palace in front.

Portsmouth slowly got themselves back into the game and took the lead on 57 minutes when David Nugent ghosted into the Eagles penalty area before tucking home a low shot into the corner.

Palace were on terms in the 81st minute after Kieron Cadogan’s near post cross was put into his own net by Pompey defender Ibrahima Sonko.

Five minutes later, Zaha tripped left-back Carl Dickinson off the ball in front of the linesman and was sent off.

Palace held on for extra-time and penalties but Kieran Djilali and Jon Obika missed their spot-kicks. Julian Speroni saved Tommy Smith’s kick before Nadir Ciftci's shot hit the post.

Nathaniel Clyne had his effort saved before Speroni kept out Carl Dickinson's penalty. At the sudden death stage, Adam Barrett was unable to score for the Eagles and Hughes did the business to send his side through to the third round.
