Crystal Palace suffered a 2-0 defeat away to league leaders Newcastle United.

With Victor Moses pulled from the squad ahead of a move out of the club, Eagles boss Neil Warnock named just three substitutes.

One had to be used within four minutes of the match after Austrian defender Johannes Ertl went off with a hamstring injury and was replaced by Matt Lawrence.

While he was receiving treatment, Palace could have gone ahead but Calvin Andrew failed to find a way past keeper Steve Harper after Darren Ambrose had put him through.

Peter Lovenkrands was inches away from getting a touch on Jose Enrique's cross, while Palace defender Danny Butterfield somehow managed to head Nick Carle's cross wide when it was easier to score.

Newcastle went in front after 20 minutes thanks to a large piece of luck when Eagles captain Shaun Derry sliced a clearance into his own net.

Lovenkrands and Andy Carroll went close to extending the home side's advantage. Palace responded with blocked efforts from Neil Danns and Carle.

Ambrose struck the post in the 70th minute and Tamas Kadar managed to get in the way of Danns' follow-up.

But Nile Ranger got the vital second goal deep into stoppage time when he collected former Palace winger Wayne Routledge's pass and slotted home.

Newcastle: Harper, Kadar, Williamson, Coloccini,Jose Enrique (Pancrate 25), Guthrie, Nolan, Smith,Gutierrez (Ranger 73), Carroll, Lovenkrands (Routledge 62).

Not Used: Krul, Butt, Tozer, Donaldson.
