Following the week that English international football died, I thought it apt to pick a Northern Irishman to be the one to watch against Hull tomorrow.
Having played the best part of 85 minutes in Northern Ireland’s shock win over England in midweek, 27 year old Stuart Elliott is a man brimming with confidence. As a forward-thinking midfielder, goalscoring is a massive part of his game, boasting over 20 goals last season from an attacking midfield/deep lying striker position – the threat that Elliott will give the Palace back-line is evident.
Standing at 5ft 10 inches tall, Elliott, to be fair, is quite stocky; blame this on what you will, big boned by Hull supporters, pie-eater by opposition fans, his strength and guile when playing are something that will provide Palace with a stern test. Stuey’s career started at Glentoran in Northern Ireland where he won three under-21 caps for his country before departing for Motherwell in Scotland for around £100,000.
At Motherwell, he was a firm favourite with ‘Well fans scoring over 20 goals in 60 appearances. Unfortunately for Motherwell, their flirtation with administration lead to assets being sold, which took Stuart to his present home at the Kingston Communications Stadium in Hull. At Hull – Elliott’s record has been exemplary, 54 goals in around 110 appearances have lead to further international honours, seasonal awards and he’s forever forging a good reputation amongst the fans in the Championship for his goalscoring and great heading ability.
Feeding off of, and feeding Elliott – Hull’s other danger-men include ex-England international Nicky Barmby whose combined transfer fees almost reach the £20m mark, John Welsh, a highly rated central midfielder on loan from Liverpool whilst Stephen McPhee is also another player who could cause some damage……just not enough to stop Palace recording their third win on the spin.
