People who feel let down and ignored by traditional politicians want to see them, and the system they are part of, given a kicking. What they don’t understand is that the “cure”:they yearn would make their situation worse, not better. No system is perfect. Corruption exists. People fail. Events happen which throw plans off track. Western democracy works. It goes on evolving but it is tried and tested. Trump and his inner circle would claim they are operating within the system but when they are prepared to corruptly overturn an election result, having won the previous election by ways many have serious suspicions about, you cannot believe that. I think Trump is capable of trying anything and could create chaos in short order if he wins.

Watching Trump’s behaviour and attitudes I cannot help but see a mob boss in the way he brooks no opposing voices around him, listens to no one and fires people immediately if they raise objections. Total personal loyalty is expected. Watching the rallies and the way he works the crowds, and the way they respond, you cannot but help thinking of those old newsreels from the 1930s. I don’t think that is a coincidence either. I think there is a degree of imitation in the style. Not the content. Just the belief that “his people” need to see him in person and be within touching distance of their saviour.

I did, but I don’t pay a lot of attention to such events. Biden doesn’t, it seems to me, to put much emphasis on “rallies”. They aren’t his style. Trump by comparison is a skilled showman, always ready to perform. Even when the speech he makes is the same outpouring of rhetoric, lies and hypocrisy as he made elsewhere a few hours ago they lap it up.

I remember it being a parody but one whose message was regarded by some as confused and unclear. People seemed to be able to find support for whatever political position they held. Everybody opposes totalitarianism but it can arrive from both the left and the right. I see much more danger of it coming from the right, via Trump, in the USA than ever I do from the left. The left in the USA barely have a voice, The Democrats aren’t left in any meaningful way. They are centralists. What in Europe we regard as social democrats. Others will disagree. Those on the right always do.

What amazed me then was the way otherwise quite rational people gave him a free pass on everything negative, and there was lots they would admit was negative. I don’t see any really “progressive” policies from Biden so would be intrigued as to what you think they are. I know there is a more progressive element within the Democratic Party who make a lot of noise but don’t seem to me to carry any weight. Biden from here looks to be a social democrat and nothing more, who quietly doing his best to bring the country back on track after the pandemic. With the USA now recovering faster than almost everywhere it seem he has succeeded. Which is at odds with the common perceptions. It doesn’t look out of control to me either. Divided for sure with two groups seeing what’s going on in totally different ways, with an unbridgeable gap between them, but still functioning. I just read response to my wife and she’s still shaking her head in disbelief at how out of touch these sentiments are to reality!!! We are all welcome to our opinions and I’m sure there is a job for you on “the view” if you would like to apply!
