Ian Wright scores his second against United
Crystal Palace's last and only other FA Cup final appearance came in 1990. We take you through the 3-3 thriller and not so exciting replay in pictures...
The 15,000 or so Palace fans who managed to get tickets were in fine voice and this was the year they began the tradition of launching a blanket of red and blue balloons for major games.
Palace 1-0 United
Crystal Palace got off to a dream start by scoring the opening goal after 19 minutes through centre back Gary O'Reilly. Phil Barber swung in a free-kick from the right side and the permed defender looped his header into the net.
Palace 1-1 United
Skipper Bryan Robson brought United back on terms 10 minutes before the break with an unmarked header at the far post from Brian McClair's floated cross that went in via John Pemberton's shin.
Palace 1-2 United
The Red Devils went ahead for the first time in the 62nd minute with a left-foot shot from Mark Hughes after Andy Thorn's clearance deflected into the striker's path.
Palace 2-2 United
Then came Steve Coppell's inspired substitution where he threw on hotshot Ian Wright seven minutes later. Wright was only on the pitch for three minutes when he scored a brilliant equaliser, twisting and turning two United defenders before slotting into the bottom corner. It forced the tie into extra time.
Palace 3-2 United
Wright popped up again for his second goal by sliding in at the back past to convert John Salako's teasing cross into the top corner and send the Palace fans delirious.
Palace 3-3 United
With the Eagles seven minutes away from glory, Hughes grabbed a vital equaliser for United. He latched onto Danny Wallace's defence-splitting pass and tucked under the onrushing Martyn to force a replay.
Palace 0-1 United
The teams returned to Wembley for the replay five days later and the game was settled by just one goal, scored on the hour-mark by Lee Martin. The defender made a 40-yard run from left-back, got inside his marker Andy Gray and fired a right-foot shot past Martyn.
Now the clubs meet again 26 years later for a re-run of that final. Can Palace gain revenge?
