Steve Bruce is tracking experienced Newcastle United defender Warren Barton, according to newspaper reports in Newcastle.
Bruce was at the United game against Barnsley in Worthington Cup on Tuesday night to watch the 32-year-old in action and is keen to strengthen his defence.
Barton can play anywhere along the back line and Bruce will be keen for an experienced man at centre half.
Steve Vickers looks likely to return back to Middlesborough after his loan spell has ended after deciding not to uproot his family for a move to London and Fan Zhiyi is about to move to Dundee.
Barton will be a free agent next summer when his contract ends and is playing well when he gets his chance in the Newcastle side.
