Dean Moxey admits he is happy to play anywhere as long as he is in the Crystal Palace team.
Moxey occupied the left-back role last season but the on-loan Ryan McGivern took his spot while he was suspended for the first four matches.
He played in an unaccustomed right-back position on his return to the side against Crawley but struggled against Blackpool last time out.
Although McGivern has since joined Bristol City, summer signing Jonathan Parr can also operate at left-back so competition is fierce.
But former Derby man Moxey maintains he would help out where required to help Palace challenge for promotion.
"You need that competition. That's what football is all about," he told the Advertiser. "If I was the only left back here I would possibly be thinking: 'I'm playing this week', and I don't like to do that. Johnny has come in and done really well but I'll fight for my position.
"It was a weird one playing on the right [against Crawley]. But it was tougher against very experienced players who have played at the top level for Blackpool.
"The gaffer asked me to play there and I gave it a go, but hopefully now I can get that left-back slot back for good.
"I've played left midfield before and left side of a front three too, and I'll try whatever the gaffer wants me to do.
"But Johnny is playing well at left midfield at the moment and ideally I'd like to slot back in at left back and make a decent partnership with him down that left hand side."
