Upbeat or downcast?

November 7 2007

Selhurst Park

Selhurst Park

Jamesey reflects on our new manager's first five games and registers conflicting messages.

New manager Neil Warnock came in with a bang.

We all hoped for the instant fix that a new man at the helm often brings.

But that has not been in evidence and the hoped-for bang has turned out to be an undeniable whimper, with 3 points out of 15 after the Cardiff away game (Nov 6).

However, unlike Peter Taylor (who was supposed to have had great rapport and expertise with young players), Neil has not been afraid to play some of our young talent, with considerable effect as well.

On the other hand, some of Neil's statements have mystified me.

The departure of Leon Cort on the grounds that he had no scars and didn't get booked enough seems a very odd judgement in modern football management.

Yes, one can read the small print...Leon was not aggressive enough for Neil's combative beliefs, but making physical challenges and getting booked constantly means being suspended and not playing at all.

Obviously some will disagree but I always thought Leon was one of our better purchases and he scored some invaluable goals last season. Well, somebody had to with the collection of dud strikers we've been saddled with in recent times.

Anyway we've got Neil Warnock for at least the season now and I wish supporters would stop referring to him insultingly as "Colin".

It may be of scant consolation to many but I'd far prefer to be bottom but one in the league in early November than in late April.

We have time and, with time, there is usually hope.

I was pleasantly surprised to read that the Manchester City/Sunderland game on Monday had a distinguished spectator.

One Malcolm Allison, now 81, was a guest of the club where, as at Selhurst Park, he was much loved and admired.

I have to confess I thought that Malcolm, CPFC manager in 73-76 and 80-81, had probably joined the great majority by now.

But, unlike George Best, Malcolm is a shining example that booze, cigars and the company of attractive girls can be a life-enhancing formula.
