Reserve team boss Paul Holden could not understand how his players were defeated 1-0 at Colchester.
Palace had a number of chance to break the deadlock at Layer Road through Nathan Simson, Tariq Nabil and Gareth Williams, who was on-loan at Colchester's first-team last season.
But in the end Jermaine Brown's 30th minute goal proved to be the match-winner when he scored from Joey Keith's pass.
Holden said: "It was an even first-half but I felt we had much more of the second period. We played very well and I can't fault any of the players.
"It was just one of those days where the ball would not go in the back of the net for us."
Palace: Berthelin, Smith (Gibson), Granville, Wilson, Togwell, Soares, Adeniyi, Watson, Wiliams, Nabil (Bashkal), Simpson (Heeroo).
Subs not used: Dolan, Cronin.
