Dougie Freedman and Tony Popovic forced the home keeper into two outstanding saves early on as Palace looked comfortable without breaking much sweat.
Then Freedman opened the scoring in the 26th minute. He took the ball from a Carshalton defender's mistake and raced through on goal, past the keeper to score in an empty net.
Hayden Mullins and Freedman had fiurther chances to extend the one-goal lead.
In the second half, Carshalton equalised, through Peter Wood after Matt Clarke had saved an initial effort.
Substitutes Tommy Black and Wayne Routledge along with Mullins had further chances to score.
But with 10 minutes left, Black scored what proved to be the winner with a weak shot from the edge of the box which went in at the keeper's near post.
