Okay, the £1,000 fine is hefty, but shouldn't this bloke be banned for life?
The chairman of the bench even said himself: "There is no place in football or anywhere else for racist behaviour." Well, only for the next five years apparently...

Ask me about Ronald de Boer.

I dont think the fine is hefty at all, if he was stupid enough to so obviously racially abuse Yorke, in front on god-knows how many cameras then he deserves it. As for the 5 year ban, thats stupid, it should be for life.

When the chips are down, these... these civilized people, they'll eat each other. See, I'm not a monster. I'm just ahead of the curve.

I think that's pretty fair.

On the other hand, does anyone think the FA should charge Yorke with improper conduct for confronting the fans. Someone of his stature should know to walk away and behave properly.

I don't see why players and managers should be treated so harshly by the FA when they are verbally abused. If somebody gives you stick, you should be entitled to have your say back. Yorke should have kung-fu kicked him out into the road

It was my dream to play for Palace and to make my debut. I've always played for the club so if I'm playing here, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

Have you ever suffered racial abuse then? Exactly.

And yes, it should be for life. As despotic says, its unacceptable, but just for 5 years.

I thought Yorke actually handled it pretty well. Why should he walk away? If he had walked away the bloke would have got away with it. He approached the arsehole and didn't start getting agressive with him, just tried to talk to him.

Just to put a different slant on this discussion, but is having monkey noises/gestures directed at you any worse than being abused because of your height, hair colour, sexual orientation, nationality etc.

I'm not condoning what happened in the Blackburn Blues game, but it begs the question, how is it that a racial slur can be perceived to be so much more serious than any other slights on individual characteristics, which are equally unavoidable? Would chating FREEEEEEEEEAK at Peter Crouch entitle him to confront the fans abusing him and then subsequently lead to a heavy fine and a ban for the prepetrators?

He also made sure the cameras caught it, I think that the abuse was wrong and the bloke was a pissed idiot who wouldn't have done exactly what he did if it hadn't happened in Spain.

I just don't see why the racial dimension of this is being played up so much, if Dwight Yorke was that 'devastated' he wouldn't have come on as a sub 2 minutes later.

For the English tabloid press to make a moral stance on this is just ludicrous. (remember the "Achtung ! Surrender" headline)

Saying racial and sexual abuse is akin to being taunted about height and hair colour is ridiculous. Although bullying of any kind is wrong , obviously.

Explain please? Why is making derogratory comments about someone's racial background any worse than insulting someone because of their height/hair colour? I was heavily bullied when I was 8 for being very tall for my age, yet had I been racially abused, it would have been perceived as far more serious. Why?

I've yet to be given a valid reason why racism should be treated as the mother and father of all insults.
