The question, of course, is whether or not he wants to play second fiddle to Watkins, although with Villa in the CL he'd get some decent minutes. Although, I've been a fan of Mateta from well before he made his mark last season, I do wonder how he'll figure this season. It was very much the Eze-Olise-Mateta triumvirate that made the magic happen towards the end of last season. Olise ahs gone; there are question marks over Eze's future so could Mateta repeat his form with a different line-up alongside him?

Wouldn't ya just love to know what Steve offered him in the new contract offer . Knowing Steve he prob offered him the same money he's on now for the next 4 years,stating that you have been pants up to the end on the last season and it could've only been a fluke that you scored so many with the help of other players . He shouldnt be cheap if we are selling i know Sarr is a ready made replacement but Matetta is proven and it will leave us short if Édouard is leaving.

JPM's negotiating power is high at present. I suppose there has to be some doubt as to whether he can maintain last season's form so the club may be apprehensive about giving him a long term contract befitting a genuine elite striker. Perhaps a performance related contract would be the solution. I hope the club can reach an agreement with him.
