OK, I admit I've had a couple of vodkas, so maybe a tad mellow, but am I the only one who thinks Ed Milliband is bonkers to want our coastline covered with wind turbines? I know we need to gradually reduce our use of carbon fuels, but, come on. These turbines, whether at sea or on land are a blot on the landscape. As a boy I holidayed with my parents in North Wales and have fond memories of times at Llandudno. On a recent trip there I was appalled to see the view from the pier littered with turbines. Horrible. Surely I'm not the only one. Am I?
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

Having turbines on land, for the most part they have to be as high as possible. the tops of hills or mountains, where wind speeds are averagely higher. Edited by Forest Hillbilly (25 Jul 2024 9.19pm)

Whatever the benefits are, my view is that they are just plain ugly. Sorry, but I can't help thinking we shouldn't be covering the country and coastline with windmills.

I think the obsession with wind turbines is misguided in that they will neither save the planet nor lead to cheaper energy (the latter being what Labour keep saying). However I've no objection to them on aesthetic grounds. I'm in France at the moment where there are hundreds of them and they do t offend me at all. The most offensive sight at the seaside is fat people showing off acres of horrible flesh.

That will be normal for them. Most of us don’t like change and often regard it as a backward step. You see it here all the time. Changing circumstances demand changed solutions. Old dirty coal tips become green hills. Old clay pits become the Eden Project.

We have to move to renewable resources for the future of glaciers, some species, etc. It isn't all pretty (solar panels on roofs are ugly too), but the alternative is much more ugly. And it's not about saving money on electricity.

It will obliterate our green and pleasant lands, find a solution to house our planned further immigrant invasion and remove many nasty behaving types from our city centres. Hadrians wall can be lined either side with literally thousands. So can our parks. Smother them.

So Daddyorc destroy countryside views and build all over everywhere. It will be the biggest mistake of the planet and Nature will destroy billions of the fast growing unsustainable human race.

I have made this point myself. When the earth gets the hump it will let us know. No amount of reduced this or over production of that will stop it. Yes cut down where you can which I know has happened and does happen but don’t forsake the Beauty and reason for being.

Hadrians wall can be lined either side with literally thousands. So can our parks. Smother them. There is no need to build skyscrapers all over the countryside. That’s a silly comparison. We need food and recreation as well as power and wasn’t the point being made anyway. What is ugly to one is beauty to another. It’s all questions of personal taste and experience. Yours being different to those who follow. I don’t mind wind farms at all, provided their design adds interest to an environment. At one time people hated tall buildings. Great ugly oblong shapes dominating the skyline. Nowadays architects design shapes of interest that add to a view. It’s happened in London and even more so elsewhere. The future for living space is upwards, not spreading further out. Places are now being built with green spaces on top of them, inside their walkways and on the outside. Good design can add to our lives. Not subtract. Go visit Hong Kong or Singapore to see it.
