There has been a lot of paper talk in the last few weeks about potential swap deals involving Palace players. Maybe Arsenal are looking to factor in Nketiah or Smith-Rowe (or Nelson) to help position them for Eze. Guehi has also been mentioned in the context of a swap deal. I hope these players stay and build with us, but it got me thinking: what are the best and worst swap deals you can remember Palace being involved in over the years? For me the worst has to be Kenny Sansom going to Arsenal with the Clive Allen headed to us. Much as I like Clinton, the best would probably be us selling Morrison for £4.25million with Andy Johnson being valued at just £750,000 as part of an exchange. Exchange or not, it must be one of the best deals in our recent history. But what others are there?

Apart from losing one of the best left backs in football history, I think the worst thing about it was, despite getting at the time what we thought was a good striker as a replacement, I think deep down once Kenny left, we knew that was it, the beginning of the end of that great little era. As with Ian Wright leaving, once great players like that leave, you know others are going to want to follow because of the apparent lack of ambition.

In the Sansom/Allen case though the offer was probably just too good to refuse. A million pound transfer in 1980 was a huge offer and Clive Allen was highly regarded himself - he was our top scorer despite not playing in all the games that season and as we know know he scored one more than he was credited.

Tell me about it, I was right in that corner as the ball flew in, it’s a shame VAR was about 40 years away back then I did actually like him for us and he scored a lot of goals for QPR so getting him did soften the blow of losing Kenny a bit.
