If you categorise protest as either ‘black or white’ (violent or non-violent), then I understand your view. However, until the law was changed, nonviolent protest in the past consisted of a man with a sandwich board declaring that the end is nigh. He stopped no one from going about their business. Likewise standing outside premises with banners and slogans in a predefined area was what nonviolent protest was. By moving protest to a situation where it interferes with the lives of others is where the problem arises as now you are obstructing others, and the more people you obstruct the more likely you are to get penalised. Add in any previous warnings and the sentence becomes more understandable. Anyway, we are emptying prisons so I doubt if they will serve more than a year.
