Have away fans always cheered and waved as their team slid ever deeper into the mire - as demonstrated by the Manchester United and Villa fans on their recent visits? Perhaps they have, but I wasn't aware of it because for us to score a hatful of goals against a top side - particularly at the Whitehorse end - is pretty much unprecedented in my experience. On the way out someone else who was puzzled by their manic behaviour innocently asked me whether they realised they were losing.

Fair play to the Utd fans - but the Villa fans had a season to celebrate. The team seemed to have given up but the goalie looked pissed off - you couldn't blame him.
I was at the Anfield 9-0, we started cheering their goals and every pass we completed. Pretty sure we cheered missing the penalty. Make the most of it I guess. I've certainly seen Palace so sh1t that it was frankly humourous.
It's the one nils, getting ripped off by the ref that are far worse for fans. Just a wind up.

To a degree I think it depends on the opposition.

I've seen Palace beat some teams convincingly (for some reason the 4-0 versus Huddersfield in the 1990 FA Cup springs to mind) and there is generally a sense of acceptance as you drive past the losing team's and fans' coaches and cars.

But smack three in against Wimbledon in the first 30 minutes (another memory from the 2001 Steve Bruce era) and the losing fans are rather less gracious.

When were were stuck in the Championship, and playing awful, I can remember more than one occasion when the 4th official was booed for putting up too much injury time. We just wanted to go home (or to the pub).

Yes we did, as it rocketed towards row ZZ.

There was a famous time when gallows humour quickly evaporated.

Our last game of 88/89. We were already in the playoffs and Birmingham City were already relegated to division 3. Over 3,000 of their fans turned up, hundreds of them wearing fancy dress, determined to celebrate in true gallows humouresque style.

Until Wrighty scored the first of what would turn out to be a hat-trick and it all kicked off big time. The running battles with police and stewards went on for nearly half an hour and the disorder was finally quelled by a mounted police charge. I've not witnessed one of those 'live' before or since.

West Ham fans were quite amusing when we battered them at selhurst last season. At one stage acknowledging how bad they were, they started singing at us in the Whitehorse “how s*** must you be? You’ve only scored 4”

Crikey, what was the tune for that one? Something by Gilbert and Sullivan?

I don't think so. As hard as I've tried I can't get those words into the tune of 'Claire'

Yes I was there as a starry eyed ten year old wondering from a safe distance what on earth was happening. It was surreal, with characters like Ronald Reagan and Minnie Mouse getting clobbered by Palace support and police alike.

The nearest I've seen since was an away match at Wolves. 2000/2001 season. They played us off the park and had more then enough chances to make it a cricket score but, amazingly, we won 0-1. Kirovski from long range from memory. To add spice to the match, they were in first place and by beating them we leapfrogged them to the top of the Championship with the result.

Leaving Molyneux and being outed as an away fan was absolutely terrifying. There was valdalism left, right and centre with police horses called into action to curtail Yamyam mayhem.

Apart from being covered in phlegm and verbally abused nothing more happened but I always connect the two events in my head.

Luckily you weren't around in the days of punk rock gigs!!
