The Guardian has highlighted some of the best players from Luton, Burnley and Sheffield Utd.

Palace, of course, picked up Andersen after Fulham got relegated and I'm sure Dougie and co are considering some of these.

To my mind Doughty is the obvious target. A late developer, although still only 24, he was with Charlton and then moved on to Stoke for under a million pounds. He did not start a game for them and was transferred to Luton in the summer of 2022, He first played for them in October of that year and has been an first choice since then. Assuming up to two assisters per goal, he has 19 for the season which is a remarkable figure for a relegated team. To put it in context, Gordon leads the league with 23 and Doughty exceeds the likes of Fernandes and Maddison. Olise with 11, in restricted appearances, tops the Palace charts
He plays as a left wing back and is their dead-ball specialist. I watched their final game of the season and as well as getting a slightly fortuitous goal from a direct free-kick (he is not a prolific scorer) he made a couple of excellent passes to players in the penalty area who were not able to take advantage of them
I believe he is a free agent and, anyways, was on a pittance, by Premier League standards, at Luton
He is already used to the Glasner formation and would prove a better attacking threat than Mitchell - though I'm guessin not as good defensively. I expect he will be in great demand
His colleague, Adebayo, would make a good back-up for Mateta if Edouard leaves

I really like him as well, whipped over some seriously good crosses against us at Selhurst, he does seem to have a wand of a left foot.
He had a short spell on loan at Bromley and managed to bag a goal or two before hitting the big time with Luton

Look at the stats on the link, clear upgrade on Mitchell & on a free transfer.
Mitchell needs competition anyway.

Hardly an upgrade if he cannot tackle. Luton got relegated with 85 goals conceded whilst we were 5th best with only 58. Mitchell was the 4th best tackler in the EPL and best English player. Doughty would probably be an upgrade on Ayew who will be 33 next September and consigned to the bench.

And in the 2016/17 season a Hull side containing Andrew Robertson conceded 80 goals en route to relegation. Imagine Liverpool had taken that stance when they signed him.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold...

A valid point to some extent but Liverpool were a top team with players who did not need to defend as much as we do and will need to do. Tyrick has proved himself as a defender and is improving as an attacker. Roberson is a good but not great defender and is more in the TAA bracket with his attacking prowess.

I have no problem with Doughty signing but see him more as a replacement for Ayew as his stats are similar in tackles, assists and goals. His strong point is that Ayew was dispossessed 79 times but Doughty only 13. He is a lot younger and can help out in defence if needed.
