....that most of us believe to be true.
- Napoleon was a warmonger. ( Nope, it was everybody else that kept declaring war on him ) - WWII started when Hitler invaded Poland ( nope, Anthony Beever has argued that Japanese military actions in the link below is the true start ) - The exact site of the Battle of Hastings ( the tourist location of Battle Abbey may actually be incorrect. Calbec hill may be where the argy-bargy really happened ) - Christopher Columbus discovered America ( nope, Leif Erikson was at Newfoundland in the 10th Century. And also Columbus seems to have restricted his adventures to the Caribbean & avoided the North American landmass almost completely ) - JFK won the standoff at the Cuban Missile Crisis ( nope, it was a negotiated settlement. Involved the US quietly removing their nukes from Turkey ) What others ?

Japan did not join WW2 until late 1941. The invasion of Poland meant that Britain and France declared war on Germany and in the next few days British and French colonies across the world also declared war. Meanwhile the Soviet Union had declared war on Poland and then Finland. So I think you can call it a world war at this point. I agree about JFK who is portrayed as a hero. It was his bungling and indecision over the Bay of Pigs that led to Castro asking for nuclear weapons. The Russians only agreed to remove them when the US agreed to do likewise in Turkey. Militarily it was a stalemate politically it meant that Khrushchev lost face at home and then his job. Edited by Badger11 (11 Apr 2024 9.10am)

After the French Revolution France was in turmoil and it's true that the other powers fearful that this would spread to them attacked France. However by the time Napoleon was a senior figure with influence he invaded Egypt, Italy, Spain and Portugal not to mention many other countries up to and including Russia. His goal was for a single European Empire governed by one set of rules (sound familiar?). Other countries kept attacking him because he was a threat.

These are my historical facts that are NOT true. The deaths of Marylyn Monroe, JFK, Princess Diana, Jeffrey Epstein, Natalie Wood are as we are told A UFO never crashed in Roswell or Lombardy in 1933 Jesus is the son of God The Vatican is a bastion of truth and kindness Jack the Ripper was not connected to the Royal Family The Monster of Florence killed 33 people on his own, and no satanic sect was involved Edouard is a quality Centre Forward
“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn |

good man. The thread is meant to stir up a discussion and exchange of opposite opinions. Next...... Queen Boudicca as a British national heroine. Apart from the longstanding error in the spelling & pronunciation of her name ( not the ecclesiastical Bodacia ) Similarly... Saddam Hussein as the butcher of Baghdad...the enemy of the West. Curiously he had been their own little puppet in the Region for a heck of a long time. It was only after he went Rogue that he got all the bad rep. Meanwhile many other nasty genocidal puppets, who have abused Human Rights, never got the rep Saddam got. Edited by PalazioVecchio (11 Apr 2024 10.39am)
