Cronyism at it's worst from all parties Partisan political honours should be banned
Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |

Edited by Badger11 (29 Mar 2024 7.19am) Political honours perhaps, but if retained certainly taken away from the politicians themselves. For others, those individuals who often give selflessly to make lives better, or serve us well in other ways, it is a way to recognise that. I have a friend who was awarded the British Empire Medal for her charity work a few years back. It was completely unexpected and overwhelmed her. It was though well deserved as she has worked tirelessly for many years helping others for no reward but the smiles she gets.

Sean Connery got a knighthood for services to the British Film Industry, this was a man who had not paid tax in the UK since the 1960's and made most of his films in Hollywood. Other celebs get theirs for dubious charity work. Anyway it should be abolished as the great and the good will always find a way through any reformed system.

If you were given an honour for “services to banking” or, let’s speculate, “defending Trump on a football website”, would you refuse because either was undeserved? It’s not rewarding celebs that’s important. It’s recognising the invisible that do good that is.

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

And isn't that the point, millions of us have spent our lives doing a job which we are paid for so why should politicians, celebs and the Civil Service get rewarded with honours. They are just doing their jobs. As for the invisible yeah they throw a bone to the people ooh look one school cleaner gets an MBE whilst the great and the good are trousering the big gongs.

Don’t think anyone’s likely to recommend me for an award! I might get a “Certificate of Merit” for longevity as a bowler if I make 90! “Services to the Establishment”? You’re having a laugh! Countering cynicism perhaps but there would be objections. I have no problem in trying to ensure only the truly meritorious receive awards. Surely that can be done by completely removing the responsibility from politicians and civil servants and putting it solely in the hands of an independent commission directly under the control of, and appointed by, the monarchy.

The 'Honours' like The BBC itself should of been consigned to the History books years ago.
