According to Charlie Methven the main face of Charlton FC the failure to reach agreement is all the fault of Palace.

[Link]

According to the Mail there are 10 clubs including Palace so why single us out?

[Link]

Well Methven has only recently taken over Charlton after a spell at Sunderland where he is hated.

He told Charlton fans his business plan (too long winded) to make the club profitable again.

1. We will run the club better than the last lot.

Me: "Well all new owners say that".

2. We will get more money when the EFL TV package is re-negotiated.

Me: "So your business plan is based on somebody else doing you a favour and giving you more money. Not much of a plan is it"

So understandably he is upset about the current stand off and is currying favour with the fans by blaming Palace.

Naturally the Charlton fans are lapping it up.

Its not difficult to see both sides of this -

a) if your a PL club & the TV money is generated because of the product that you help to produce / make it attractive, then why give some of the earnings to lower league clubs
b) if your a lower league club you would be within your rights to say, well without the lower leagues providing a pyramid the talent that is showcased in the PL wouldn't have a stage to be discovered.

I don't profess to know the ins & outs of this but if the TV money deal is between the PL & the TV broadcasting companies, with the clubs having votes on how its allocated, surely its better to have an agreement before any Government regulator is appointed, isn't it ?

You really wouldn't want a Government regulator involved - you just know that the allocation would be by meeting 'quotas'

In general I am in favour of a better deal for the EFL however there is an element of absurdity to it.

Charlton are complaining because they want more from Palace amongst others. If they get more money there aim is to use it to replace us in the PL.

It's like the small corner shop next door to the supermarket demanding a cut of their income so they can enlarge their own premises and compete with them.

It's also about Charlie Methven covering his backside with the Charlton fans. He doesn't really have a strategy to reduce Charlton's annual £10m losses beyond the obvious cut player's wages and get promoted at the same time. So he is clinging to the hope that more money will appear from the PL.

I thought the whole government regulator thing came about because there was a feeling that football in the UK couldn't get its own financial house in order so distribution of TV money & profit & sustainability will be key areas that any regulator will want to be involved in -

If both those issues are sorted "in house" before the regulator is appointed it would pretty much negate the need for a regulator - wouldn't it ?

And for sure as Becky indicates below -almost nothing is better once the Government gets involved.

Maybe Methven could write a letter apologising for the fact that CAFC were total idiots and are very sorry for their childish behaviour when they sent us down. We now realise you are the better side, we are begging, please can you help us.

The letter to be printed in both clubs programme. Then we may consider have a whip round.

Methven is a PR man.

A PR man that has just arrived at Charlton.

He's playing to his audience of Clowns.

I’m surprised the Clown fans are lapping up Methven’s words. Seeing as how they’ve been away from the PL for 16 years and are still coping and seething….

Most Charlton fans are a pretty decent bunch, sensible and realistic. However they have a small group of self appointed big mouths who think they speak for the fans.

In that 16 years through protest (some of it violent) these geniuses have got rid of their greatest manager and various owners who did not measure up to their standards.

The only problem with this strategy is that they have got progressively worst owners.

Methven is the mouth piece for the current consortium. It remains to be seen whether they are any better than the previous ones. He was previously at Sunderland just go to their fan sites to see what they think of him.

However the more sensible Charlton fans suspect that Methven and real owners are pump and dump merchants. Their aim is to get Charlton back into the championship and then sell the club for a profit.

We will see.

The HF are not happy with our owners perhaps they should read up on the last 16 years of Charlton's history.

It seems to be that there are 10 clubs that don't want to go forwards with it.

It sounds like the clubs are using it as a chance to a) stick it to the PL board about their own sustainability rules and seeking changes there; and b) very willing to take the Govt to court about the proposals.

Given how many court battles the Government has lost recently and how - forget the football context for a minute - absurd it is that a business be forced to prop up a competitor business, it's very possible that the clubs would win.

I think the PL should do more to support the EFL but it's all in the details. A deal that effectively supported their academy system and benefitted football as a whole could be great.

A deal that is paid for by equal amounts by all PL clubs regardless of their own revenue (e.g. £10m each) and goes straight into the transfer budgets of EFL clubs to potentially piss that money away puts a lower mid-table Premier League club in a weak position. The clubs above are comparatively better off, and the clubs below are comparatively better off.

Maybe if Charlton hadn’t been so poorly run they would still have a chance of getting promoted(twice now) and enjoying the riches of the premier league the correct way by actually earning it and not wanting hand outs
