Not totally because in a few years' time the new electric furnace will be up and running, but the lost customers may not return. The UK loses its ability to produce its own virgin steel, the only G20 member not to be able to do so. £500 millions up the spout, a disaster for 3,000 families, a Brexit bonus for India and China's exports. Another fine tory privatised mess.

I drive past Port Talbot a few times a month. A strange town, totally dominated by the steelworks.
I disengage, I turn the page. |

you wouldn't live in Port Talbot by choice. The only reason you'd live there is a connection to the steelworks. (photo is a view from the M4 flyover) Attachment: Port Talbot 28.4.23 - cropped.jpg (19.99Kb)

The irish Government put a heavy tax on old emissions vehicles. Meaning that if you bought a flash 2 litre Audi in 2006, it was soon worth a pittance....even with low mileage. Resale value of nearly nothing. British Steel ? its surprising it lasted as long as it did. Isn't all heavy industry now gone to China ?

The government has subsidised the steel industry for years at taxpayers expense. They paid another load just to keep this steel works open at all. I am concerned about our steel production in relation to military needs, but our steel is just not competitive with China. It produces a massive amount cheaply.

One of the most fascinating realities of this current debacle between Russia and Ukraine is that due to the supposed 'punishment' of sanctions and stopping exporting all kinds, the Russia economy has boomed because people are buying Russian made goods and reinvesting profits into Russian industry. Saw a claim that Russia has now over-taken Germany in terms of economic output.

Self sufficiency wherever possible has to be a good thing in an uncertain world.
