Mel has died. He was 79. Many will remember him playing alongside John McCormick.

They were a terrific combination.
Blyth was something of a 'sweeper' covering anything that got past McCormick.
Good player.

A true Palace legend….use to pick up a Curry from the Akash in Wallington…..
I use to remind him of his first performance in the old first division when we played Man U….he use to point to his pocket and tell me that he had George Best “in there’ all game”.!
A lovely man.

And another one of my boyhood heroes has gone. Great memories of watching Mel play, not only him scoring our first top flight goal but also some cracking OGs too. RIP big man.

The following Saturday I drove with two mates to see us away to Everton. Mel scored with a long-distance screamer, and I still recall a local turning to me with the words "that were a cracker."
Everton equalised with a penalty and then got the winner - an omen of things to come! I've a vague idea Mel came to us from scunthorpe.

You are correct.

Mel Blyth did like a pass back to the goalkeeper in an era when the keepers could pick up the ball.

Great footballer for a defender which wasn’t seen often as it is in today’s times. Certainly in my top 10 favourite players to watch was Mel. Talking about own goals, I’m sure it was Mel at Spurs who lobbed one over Jacko’s head from about 30 yards out? RIP Mel Blyth

Sad to hear this. He was a Palace hero of mine and in his prime when I first started going to games. He would be worth a lot these days.

RIP Mel.

Great guy as well as a great footballer. Had numerous pints with him, Kember, Danny Light and Salako at our local village club.

So many players we’ve lost in the last few years. RIP to them all.
