I spent 75:minutes of last night's borefest watching Rory Gallagher on YouTube with the occasional glance at the football to confirm first impressions of how bad it was. He was a wonderful guitarist who doesn't get enough credit. Another one, slightly surprising to some, was Glen Campbell who played some lovely stuff and was, in his day, a highly regarded session musician. Who else deserves a listen?

I spent 75:minutes of last night's borefest watching Rory Gallagher on YouTube with the occasional glance at the football to confirm first impressions of how bad it was. He was a wonderful guitarist who doesn't get enough credit.
Another one, slightly surprising to some, was Glen Campbell who played some lovely stuff and was, in his day, a highly regarded session musician.
Who else deserves a listen?

I have a very talented guitar player in my family, who I won't name, and I don't listen to his stuff either, although he is truly incredible. What he does doesn't seem humanly possible.

Yes there are some who are almost too good - Tommy Emmanuel for example or Mike Dawes whose acoustic version of Jump is astonishing. Gordon Giltrap was another I liked in the 70s although the sort of Mike Oldfield stuff he played wasn't my usual thing.

Yes there are some who are almost too good - Tommy Emmanuel for example or Mike Dawes whose acoustic version of Jump is astonishing. Gordon Giltrap was another I liked in the 70s although the sort of Mike Oldfield stuff he played wasn't my usual thing.

Tommy has personality on stage. He is also a great player, of course.
Let's just say that I have a bit of inside knowledge of Tommy.

My mum owned that massively-bought 20 Golden Greats LP and I was touched by some beautiful songs - By The Time I Get To Phoenix, Galveston and of course The Wichita Linesman. Written by genius songwriter Jimmy Webb. Talking of virtuoso guitarists not often spoken in the same sentence such as Page, Hendrix, Blackmore etc., I remember watching an incredible performance from Johnny Winters on the OGWT.

half the people, at the top of the music industry, have zero musical talent. Just neck, pushiness, networking, wealthy backers and a cutthroat attitude. Madonna being a case in point. I agree about Glen Campbell being good....he could play the bagpipes too. For me, a brilliant musician is somebody whose music shows much variety in style. Therefore Tom Waits is the GOAT. you can get a bit sick of Rock & Pop all the time. Variety is the spice of life. Can i throw out a request for any modern Orchestral music.....ie Classical but post 1900. Stravinsky, obviously very important. But the fella below can also be amazing........Arvo Part.....and still alive. I believe the tune below was featured in the Oppenheimer movie. [Link] . My sister has lived in Australia for the last 40 plus years and whenever she came over she bought me a CD of some Aussie talent. She bought me a Tommy Emmanuel CD many, many years ago and I don't think that I ever played it thinking that it was the usual rubbish. I must see if I've still got it
