Alistair Darling RIP

That's very harsh, only 70, he always looked robust and so calm. He made it seem that total chaos was under control, better at his job, and a better person, than any of today's lot. Nobody from either side seems to have a bad word about him. Trucking magazine voted him the most boring man in politics, two years running, he would probably have seen that as a compliment. RIP

Darling took over about a year before the 2008 crash so I don't hold him personally responsible, in fact an article this week said he fell out with Brown as he warned him "storm's a comin". Th reason we were hit hard in 2008 was that the Blair / Brown coalition had already spent money they didn't have so we had no rainy day funds and then the monsoon arrived. Darling seem to be a decent guy RIP.

His death is another reminder of what we have lost from politics: Gordon Brown, Robin Cook, Ken Clarke, Michael Heseltine, Maggie Thatcher, Geoffrey Howe, Shirley Williams. Whatever you thought of their politics, they were serious statesmen (and women) who wanted to serve the country. Giants compared with today's rabble.
