Did anyone else scratch their head at this signing? Johnstone has done well last season when he played and so this season he has been decent. It makes sense to have Whitworth as no 2 he is a capable number 2. But the Henderson signing did not make sense considering how well Johnstone is playing.

Been said on other threads what is going on spending £40m on Henderson and Franca, no sign of either of them playing. We had a great window when we signed Guehi, Anderson but since then all very underwhelming. Common theme on here is we are doing the best we can with the financial constraints we’ve got. Well I don’t agree with that.

Or, looking at it another way - why did Henderson sign for us? Reportedly, he is on big money (£100k per week) so that must be a factor. But he must surely also have expected to be playing week in, week out? He has England ambitions and is a very well thought of keeper. I can't believe he joined us expecting to back up keeper. Maybe, Johnstone's form has surprised the "powers that be". I think he has been outstanding for us this season and when he played last season. Henderson may have been thought of as an investment. That his value would go up whilst playing for us and becoming an established England international. But that can only happen if he starts regularly for us. Even if they were both fit, I would not start him ahead of Johnstone at the moment. I don't know how far away from being fit to play Henderson is but it could be a while. I guess one of them will leave at the end of the season. If it is Henderson then I doubt it will be for a profit. I would really like SP or DF to offer an insight but that is very unlikely to happen.

This is a good possibility, or maybe with Sam seeming to have cemented his place as England 3rd choice again, we might have been expecting an offer we couldn’t refuse for him from another club Edited by monkey (14 Nov 2023 11.34am)

As good as Sam has been I do think that when fully fit Henderson is the better keeper, plus he's a few years younger. Whether we need two excellent keepers is the question though, especially when we didn't replace Zaha, need to invest in new fullbacks and have questionable strikers. Holding seemed an even stranger signing to me though. £4 million to make up numbers in training.

Franca I think could come good needs more minutes. Time will tell how he fits in. What is strange is that Franca is not a LW he is an attacking midfielder he can play as an 8 or number 10. Eze will not be benched when Palace play 4-2-3-1 he will be the CAM. Even when Palace play 4-3-3 it is hard to see where Franca will fit if Eze plays as an 8 Doucoure will be the DM and the other 8 would probably be Hughes or Lerma. Olise will play RW. So unless Franca can play LW or a false 9 it is hard to see where he fits in . Agree instead of Henderson needed a new RB someone like Sacha Boey or Max Aarons.

Henderson Holding Franca. Three very strange signings for all the reasons already well covered on other threads here. When we really needed two wing backs and another striker. Nearly all our budget spent (which we never really had) on these three. Very very odd........

This reflects my thinking and I'd add that I still perceive Henderson as filling two roles in being an alternative/competitive option in goal (on the assumption he'd be fit) and the fact that there may be some ROI with his acquisition. Holding for me is very much the 'filling' in the squad I've alluded to previously. The general gripe I have seen, and align with, is that the first team is lacking and money has been spent on squad fillers and players perhaps with potential ROI but not providing immediate solutions. When we all watch us play, and we do not do well, those obvious gaps in the first XI will be the main source of grievance.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

The concerning thing is that this season teams seem to have cottoned onto the fact that our fullbacks are probably the weakest area and so have on occasion ruthlessly targeted them by creating overloads. If Gala don't make it through their CL group then I say throw money at them and try and get Boey. He's going to be a star.

Also, I honestly thought for a moment, after arriving at 'Gala' when reading, you were going to propose bringing (back) another Galatasaray players to perform at RB TL!

Ha, yeah, Wilf at right-back, Bolasie at left-back. Getting the band back together! (this is a joke before anyone takes me literally)

I think holding was just desperate, a body through the door type signing, we needed numbers and it wouldn’t have been too hard to sign him I should imagine
