A bit of escapism from the last few days, a mate sent me a long Tweet about poo-gate from the playoff semi-final against Brighton. Our coach driver s***ting all over the changing room, us blaming Brighton and using it as motivation to beat them was such a ridiculous story that I got thinking about other absurd events or news stories from our history. The most ridiculous I could think of was when the press linked Colonel Gaddafi with with a takeover bid which his spokesman was forced to deny. A murderous dictator vehemently denying interest in our club seemed quite a fitting summary of us at that time. Here's the original story: [Link] Anything similarly bizarre or amusing to that which anyone can remember?
We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold... |

Remember both of those Canterbury and I'm particularly pleased you mentioned the Gaddafi thing as it's one of those that never gets mentioned! I therefore sometimes question as to whether that was some sort of drunken memory or dream I'm recalling and will make me look insane if I share it with anybody
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

There was a story doing the rounds in the summer of 1973 that Crystal Palace had such a strong and star-studded squad, that they were certainties to bounce straight back into Division 1. It was reported that some bookmakers were refusing to take bets on a Palace promotion, so certain was the outcome.
Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes) |

I heard a story that Dave Swindlehurst and Ian Walsh had a punch up on a building site. It was widely mentioned at the time although I never heard if it was true.

I remember the pre-season friendly against Calais in the 80’s. Some Palace fans jumped on the pitch and tied the French keeper to a goal post with a Union Jack. Sounds ridiculous, but I’ve still got the newspaper cutting in a palace scrap book I’ve got in the loft. I think it made the front page of the current bun

At the time, I worked with a rabid, arrogant Spurs fan. This story was one of the two times he gave Palace any respect. The other was when we ("apparently" ) "took" the Clock End at Highbury.

I think I posted the story once before, so I won't bore everyone with it again as it's a little bit involved...but I actually once met and spoke to him on the opening night of a 'joint' in Leicester Square that he, Madonna and someone else (I can't remember) put either their money or their endorsement towards.
