I've been having a think today. And I'm pretty sure palace are the only team in Premier league history to have been in the Prem for a solid decade and not won a major trophy or qualified for European football. Can any one back this up for me by naming a team who haven't?

And what if the answer is "no"?
Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes) |

Then you are the weakest link, goodbye I think you could go as low as 7/8 years and every club have managed to do either of the above?

To aim to finish each season between 12th and 15th is an ambition of sorts I guess.

After the Sheffield United result against Newcastle a Millwall mate texted me that he was so glad they didn't go up last year as that would have been them. For a club of Palace's size to stay in the PL 10/11 years is an achievement that many other clubs out side of the PL would love.

It's hard to determine what constitutes 'ambition' for any football club before you then decide whether that's permanent or the definition changes season by season. For example, a push for Europe may be 'ambitious' for us but for Bradford, an actual City as opposed to our little corner of London, with a similar sized stadium, it may be the play offs in League Two. Perhaps a better definition of 'ambition' in football is a longer term goal, including sustainability, which then determines what might constitute success season by season. We remain a PL club, one of the top 15 in the land, in a healthy financial position with a genuine chance of silverware although that may be a long shot. Most if not all the clubs above us have spent their way there whereas we do not seem equipped for such an approach. I would therefore suggest slow, incremental improvements to the club and team, iteratively moving us forward whilst sustaining our existence and PL membership, is plenty ambitious given the reality of our situation. Until we begin moving backwards, which may be an inevitability if nothing else changes, any major gamble may only see us move slightly above where we are now (we won't be challenging for CL). The risk associated with that however is we fall before plummeting and having our very existence threatened once more. Accrington away for a Palace in administration, on a cold January midweek, would certainly make these days seem far more romantic than they do sometimes. All that said, get a RB and a Winger in FFS Murray (It's easier to blame him plus it just rolls off the tongue instinctively). COYP
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

COYP So far we have been lucky with our limited investment in that we have not been over taken by too many other clubs. If for example rich owners turned up at Sunderland, Ipswich, Derby, Norwich etc. by which I medium size clubs on a par with Palace then we would be in trouble. Clubs like Newcastle have always been bigger than palace so were never a threat. I don't worry about the Sheiks taking them over, it's when they pop up at Southampton or Portsmouth or QPR that I get worried.
