At the grand age of 52 I have passed my driving test and am now chewing at the bit to get my 1st car.

I have a short list which all have around 1 litre engines due to the ridiculous prices insurance companies are quoting.

Also it will only be used for the commute and social so I don't really need a mile muncher.

The cars I'm looking at are

Citroen C3
Ford fiesta
Peugeot 208
Renault Clio
and my personal favourite
Alfa Romeo Mito (although it doesn't get brilliant reviews for reliability).

Does anyone have experience of these cars and give any advice on good/bad points to help me choose?

My budget is around £3000-£4000 and the insurance quotes I'm getting are around £2000 fully comp!!!!!

I did look at the Mini One but being a 1.4L the quotes are £2500+

Any help and advice would be most welcome

Mate, ive just got rid of an 06 plate Mini Cooper Convertible in Scarlet Red with 6mths MOT. I gave it away, not allowed to drive anymore due to my condition. Talk about bad timing. Grrr.

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

That's a shame but tbh I think the insurance direct debit hit each month would feel like a new prison inmate in the showers.

Are they a good car though do you think mate?

Yes, it is a BMW, so you ain't getting tat. The times i was in the UK, the place in Waddon did a brill job(not cheap). Still a 'free' car would negate you insurance payments, nes par?

Will run for ever.

1st thing I check for. Refuse to give that Sadiq C**t a single penny of my money. The A hole went to Ernest Bevin school who were our arch enemies (Furzedown) many years ago, same age as me too.

Aww, thank you. I would've given it away, well, for a few beers(don't drive anymore ). Hope you find something suitable.

Tbh get a family car. All the little ones are expensive on insurance as it’s boy racers insurance for first time drivers. Go for a Skoda or larger Vauxhall etc. Check the insurance quote and you may save a bit which can go towards a car. Even a Beamer could be cheaper.

Not always, I got a new Fiesta last year, it’s really nippy because of the eco boost mild hybrid engine, it’s really economical and I was amazed how cheap the insurance was, especially for a brand new car and especially as it’s what a lot of youngsters go for if they can’t afford the ST performance version.

I agree. From what I've gathered from insurance quotes its all about the engine size. The 1 litre Mito I like is over £500 cheaper than the 1.4 litre version. Sure the 1.4 will be quicker all round but I'm 52 now and have no interest in trying to convince ladies I have a big d**k. My need for speed has been replaced by an ache for cake...
