As a break from Steeleye's anti-British posts, thought we should take a look at a country that is presumably one of his favourites. South Africa has the highest Gini index in the world: 63 percent. The index measures a country’s wealth distribution – the closer a value is to zero the more equal the residents of that country are. Unemployment has hit thirty-three per cent—the highest rate in South African history, and one of the highest in the world. In a Gallup survey, sixty-five per cent of South Africa’s sixty million people reported that they had struggled to afford food over the previous twelve months. Despite its vast natural resources, from gold and diamonds to titanium and uranium, South Africa suffers regular electricity blackouts of up to 10 hours a day. Meanwhile they have stopped keeping figures for the number of murders of white farmers and their families because they were so embarrassing. The police take bribes, companies routinely pay politicians for contracts. Basic services, such as sanitation and water, are often unavailable.

The place is a f***ing dump - I often meet illegal immigrants from South Africa presenting for asylum in Ireland. Obviously economic migrants. They've got self rule and equality so leave them to it.

if everybody fights for a bigger slice of cake, and nobody does any cooking......then we all go hungry.

Their Gini Index rating makes them the most unequal country in the world. I wonder if the ordinary people there look back on pre-1994 as a Golden Age in comparison with it now. Remember when the media and the chattering classes were always going on about how great it was after Mandela took over - they are very silent now.

Like with Zimbabwe, these are criticisms we are not permitted to make. Akin to who we are at War with in "1984". Say, "Hang on, were we not at War with the other lot..?" and Room 101 beckons.

I would think, and I haven't looked into it, that it's blamed on, firstly Apartheid, then Colonialism and then exploitation by Western Capitalists.

One part of it that does fascinate me is here... Probably not the best place for a Brit to settle, for historical reasons, but potentially a role model/blue print for what the future might come to in the next 50 or so years for many of us. Definitely a bright spot amongst the wider doom and gloom in that part of the world.

Surely Brexit is to blame? No doubt Wisbelch can construct an argument for this?

One of the most predictable things ever. One thing we despicable Europeans learned was how to run things. It seems that most of Africa is still in the dark ages where it has been for most of human history, and you can see why. A select few make bags of money exploiting the masses just the same. At least we have that in common.

That Africa will copy the vehicle manufacturers of Germany or the software professionals of Silicon Valley ? And all be wealthy, peaceful & prosperous any day now.

I realise you mean that ironically, but we humans do sometimes behave despicably, and those who subjugate and cruelly treat other humans are morally bankrupt. And let me stress, I don't want to appear "holier than thou", because I'm definitely not. I visited SA in the apartheid era, and I'm sure I would have been as seduced by the good life as the rest of the the white minority. Conclusions:- Apartheid had to go; changing from such a long-entrenched political system would, as you say, have predictable consequences; those consequences will take a couple of generations to wash through; they have been far worse than I expected.
