Rumour doing the round is that these 3 have signed a new 1 year extension. Matt Woosnam is supposed to have broken this story(cant find a link atm). IF, true, does this mean we won't be signing a RB? Thommo is a decent back up CB. Also, IMO, this means that Roy & Ray will continue in the dugout, at least for next season.

Thoughts?

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

Makes a lot of sense. We still need dynamis young overlapping wingbacks though. Whether we're getting Potter or the Roy, Ray and Padfy show, hopefully by the end of June we'll see real movement on signings

An extract from his article in The Athletic:

"James McArthur and Luka Milivojevic have departed, trimming the wage bill. Joel Ward has signed a new deal to stay, alongside Nathaniel Clyne and James Tomkins, meaning there is still experience in the squad to supplement the youthful recruits of the last two seasons".

He also suggests that there won't be a significant transfer kitty unless we sell players.

Further points he's made are:
1. Lerma will join on 1st July
2. We are very keen on the 19 yo. Flamengo forward, Matheus Franca who Freedman went to Brazil to see play. Woosnam thinks we might go for him if Zaha leaves.

Hopefully this is only partly true.

Re-signing Tomkins would be madness. The bloke is so injury prone now that when required as a back up he is rarely available.
Over the last 3 seasons he has barely featured and when called upon he has looked out of his depth - very slow and unable to pass the ball.

No issue with Ward and to a lesser extent Clyne but it shows our limited transfer budget if we re-sign both. Clyne was re-signed as a stop gap 3 years ago!

Losing McArthur and Luka may not be an issue in terms of the first XI, but they are both quite vocal and leaders. With them gone I guess the belief is we still need some experience around the squad even if they are not going to play regularly, if at all. Also, they are probably relatively cheap to keep onboard. Personally I'd have let Clyne go and tried to secure a new right-back permanently or on loan, as Ward is more reliable fitness wise and is still good enough against most bottom half teams. Also, doesn't Ferguson's deal expire this month too?

If Wilf goes we need to replace him. If one of the strikers leave I imagine we'll replace them. I wonder whether Philips or one of the youngsters may fill Luka/Maccas place in the squad alongside signing Lerma on a free.

We have a strong core of players, but if we had a bad run of injuries we are seriously lacking in depth. I guess that is a big factor in who gets new deals too.

Personally, I thought he did ok when called upon.

When Richards is fit Tompkins will be 4th choice CB so good cover for next season imo. Better that than a younger player who gets frustrated at lack of game time.

We have to sign a right back. We'll have zimmer frames at full back before long.

I agree about Tomkins, surely Ward can be the 4th CD, with a RB coming in, Buy or Loan, with Clyne as back up.

I think a lot depends on their salaries. Not sure how accurate it is but, according to sportrac and along with Ferguson, they were costing almost 200,000 per week. Clyne is a huge chunk of that and I would have thought his needs to be severely reduced

Ultimately it's a question of:
1. Finances and
2. Priorities
in that order.

Having spent more than £120m since Hodgson's first departure, the coffers may not be looking that promising.

Re the RB position it may simply be that we would rather spend any money we have elsewhere (presumably up top or possibly LB).
