Can't see a thread on AI at the moment so apologies if I've missed it.

Thought this was interesting. The quote from the article that says some "skeptics" are dismissing the forecasts that AI can lead to our extinction are "focussing on doomsday scenarios" to distract from issues such as racism and misinformation (which I assume includes anyone who criticises the hysteria around climate change).

So those who use doomsday scenarios to make their point over climate change and oil (Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil for example) are now cross because something they don't protest about might get us all first.

It will be interesting to see if AI can be cancelled.

*For the avoidance of doubt, this thread has not been generated by a Mezzerbot.*

"Despite dire warnings from technology leaders, some skeptics contend that artificial intelligence isn’t advanced enough to justify fears that it will destroy humanity and that focusing on doomsday scenarios is only a distraction from issues like algorithmic bias, racism and the risk of rampant disinformation."

The issue with AI for me is that it 'learns' from information that it gathers. Therefore, it is data that is put in that comes out - or data taken from the internet. That does not exactly make AI right in any way, ethically or even correct. I've lost count of the amount of times Google/ Wikipedia etc are blatantly incorrect. AI is not really anything like it is being portrayed as currently. It is not as powerful as one human brain at present, I believe. Well, ok, it's up with Shearer but not quite on normal person level yet. I'm pretty sure it's not that close to human level intelligence. I'm sure it will be at some stage but also sure molecular processors will be required.

I think some people have been watching too many Arnold Schwarzenegger movies. If a massive cyborg suddenly appears from the future and announces ‘I’ll be back’ as he disappears again, then maybe we’re in trouble !!

I sort of get the complacency but a lot of the warnings are from people who have actually been involved in developing it.

I'm not prone to hysteria relating to this or climate change. It's just interesting to see a Doomsday face off between various parties.

The immediate threat to humanity is massive job losses.

Some people are demanding a 4 day week, WFH, big pay rises and the idiots on social media are encouraging quiet working...

They will soon have their wish as many people will be at home and wont even have a 4 day week.

We are sleepwalking into a new industrial revolution and this one will impact the middle classes.

Mix AI with drones and we are in BIG trouble.

Suspect that within 10 years, there will be permanent drones stationed above almost all urban areas. Those things can stay up for hours at a time. Then you will have smaller ones, used for a variety of functions.

It does not require much of a leap of imagination to envisage a time when much smaller drones could be used for crowd control measures.

Somebody decides to give those a 'kill all' order, and things get very messy, very quickly.

AI meets the Internet of 'things'. That's the nightmare scenario.

The Israeli's recently killed a senior Iranian by remote controlled machine gun. I'm surprised that the terrorists haven't cottoned onto to that one, why kill yourself when you can murder from a safe distance.

I suspect that the technology is quite easy these days.

As for drones just buy a £400 one strap a bomb to it and crash it into your target.

150 years ago, a large grain farm would employ enormous numbers of people at Harvest time. Now all replaced with a machine, a lorry and a computer.

next, the information workers, fighter pilots, Language translators & teachers....and a whole tranche of other workers.....all to be onto the slagheap of history.

Artificial Intelligence to do our work ? how about creating 'Artificial Stupidity' to watch all the light-entertainment programmes & HipHop videos ?

if you listen to Jordan Peterson you will also know that AI p*** will unemploy a whole raft of sex-workers.

Like terminator, you will have a p*** provider that is a learning machine, that knows how you think and learns on the job. Sex ? electronics that are Even better than the real thing.

Natural stupidity is the exact opposite of AI and has been in the ascendency for generations. Marry natural stupidity and artificial intelligence together and we've sounded our death knell.

Chess Computers have been dead hard ( or impossible) to beat, for ages.

AI will replace a ton of workers with something more reliable than a human. A bit like the way they Fly airplanes these days.

the jobs at the bottom of the pile......they will be the first to suffer or disappear. Much like the coffee machines you now see everywhere. If an eejit can do it, a machine will do it.

And the idea of banning AI ? how did they ban Nuclear weapons & guns ?
