League One play-off semi-final 2nd leg.

Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 up against Peterborough, facing a 0-4 deficit from the 1st leg.

6 minutes of added time at the end of the 90 minutes.

Sheffield Wednesday equalise on 90+8 minutes (2 further minutes inexplicably added on).

It goes without saying that Sheffield Wednesday went on to win (on penalties, as it happens).

YT felt somewhat sorry for Peterborough, before he realised that Peterborough's manager is none other than the great Sir Alex's son Darren. Oh dear, did he look glum in the post-match interview? A chip off the ol' block!

The "Added-on" time displayed is a MINIMUM value and further time can be added for substitutes,time-wasting etc etc.

Apropos Peterborough goalkeeper Will Norris,I had heard before the game that he had saved a few penalties for Camb Utd when Shaun Derry was the manager at the club and I did think about this when the game went to a shoot-out.

Indeed "etc etc" such as Man Utd being in desperate need of an equaliser or a winner, or sometimes both.

With the utmost respect I do not agree with the premise of this statement.
In the final analysis referees do not add on further time to aid a particular team.

Can anyone explain why Ferguson was occasionally seen towards the end of a game showing his watch to the fourth official?

All that so called "Fergie Time" has been well documented and discussed over the years.

The rules regarding added time as with so many other things in football are as strictly monitored, policed and regimented as Ivan Toney and Odsonne Edouard's commitment to professional football player conduct.

I'm sure like many I have seen countless number of games, some where I have a concern for such things and many more I have not, where you either fall down the conspiratorial rabbit hole for excessive time added on or scratch your head at only a couple of minutes in a game full of incident.

When a last minute goal is scored in a high stakes game this will inevitably lead to an emotional critique of such things. Some game though, have to say. Also, for a Thursday night, seeing a number of last minute goals and plenty of Extra time played across PL, play offs and European games, was an unexpectedly good night of football!!

On a personal aside, I often watch Baz Bannan and think 'he's still got it... maybe we should bring him back!!'. Probably on my own there

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

There is absolutely no way that 2 minutes of the 6 minutes added on last night were somehow wasted. But isn't it just a typical example of how badly football is run? Let's take timekeeping away from the referee and put it in the hands of an official timekeeper to ensure fairness and objectivity. The timekeeper will then objectively (albeit impenetrably) calculate how much additional time should be added. Then....in the final few frenzied minutes, let's switch from objectivity to subjectivity and hand timekeeping back to the referee, who inevitably will be caught up in the emotion of the occasion.

We live in a technological age where there are boundless possibilities but we still let some bloke(s), with stakes and emotions as high as could possibly be, take a punt at 'added time'.

I still don't think it quite difficult to stop the clock whilst the ball is not in play. If the general consensus is 'we've always done it that way, it's far too complicated and ruins the flow of the game', or anything else, just come out and say so.

You might argue the same technology could not be applied/available everywhere but hasn't stopped VAR. It's almost as though football gets every single one of these decisions wrong or ballses it up in some way whereas other sports seemingly transition without too much notice.

"Agreed" is all I can say.

And when you read the comments on HOL from certain apologists for the rotten system (or one apologist in particular) you despair.

For a while now I've been of the opinion that football should adopt a similar approach to rugby and stop the clock when the ball is out of play or when a player is 'injured'. I'm convinced we would see less play acting and time wasting.

Is it so impractical?

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

It's the perfect solution. Whether footballers could cope with actually having to play for a full 90 minutes is another question!
