PV's reluctance to play Hughes was for me unfathomable and infuriating. I see him as the key player for getting us out of this mess and I hope Roy has the foresight to start him each match. A player who never has a bad game and whose intelligence and speed of thought coupled with awareness of the positions of his team mates means that we could create far more chances going forward particularly through the middle (something we rarely do) instead of aimlessly passing the ball around and then, either hoofing it up field (when we generally lose possesion) or trying to build an attack from the wings which generally results in a cross with no one on the end of it. I'm convinced that a bit more confidence in moving forward with the ball in midfield would reap dividends and giving Hughes a bit of a free role would give us more in the way of attacking options.

Should have been in the team since the moment he signed. He's always been an excellent player and all he's done for us when coming on is improve our performance. Another ridiculous selection choice from Viera. He's basically our Ward-Prowse without the shot.

He's a scrapper, and that's what you need in a relegation dogfight. A midfield three of him, Doucoure and Lakonga would give us a strong base from which to build attacks with all three also capable of picking a pass. My one concern is how often he's been out sick this season, as opposed to injured. I hope he doesn't have more serious health issues.

Ironically it is the reason you cite to play why he should not. Tough combative and great cover for defence he is. But distribution is poor. Other players have to come close in support when he recovers the ball so they can pass for him.

Seconded, there was one recent game when he took on the oppo midfield on his own and why he wasn't playing previously or since (injuries excepted) is wierd. Hopefully Roy will address this.

Enjoying getting up later and not having someone who knows better than me (apart from the missus of course).

I don't agree with this. I think his passing and link up play when going forward is one of his strengths.

One of those players whose reputation goes up the more he isn't in the team.

Listen , nothing would please me more than to see Hughes up his game ,take the match by the scruff of the neck and drag us away from the cliff edge .

I haven't seen anything that would suggest he would do that though

I really dont get what he brings above any other midfielder at the club . Unfortunatenly I think he is one of those really good young players that just never progressed , for me a poor mans Johnny Williams .
I think he has support because he doesn't play , if he did every week Luca would suddenly become the Messiah in waiting

I think it was the home draw against Newcastle when he was interviewed after the game because he was clearly MOTM with the studio pundits singing his praises. His reward? being dropped for the next match.

I'm a big fan of Hughes, especially compared to others that have occupied space, and nothing more than that, in midfield this season.

Is he a world-class CM, probably not, but he gets stuck in, has good experience, a good footballing brain and at least enough if not more technical ability to match.

Not the most athletic, but I don't see that as too necessary for that role. I'd have him starting but the likes of PV obviously thought differently. I thought Hughes/Doucoure looked far more solid than many other combinations. For what it's worth I'd have Hughes and Doucoure behind ASL in the midfield.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!
