I'm not sure if this would qualify as a generational thing but he really was the voice of football for me and I am genuinely quite sad. RIP and thanks John.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

I am very saddened to hear of John Motson's passing. I recall with great affection, Roy Hodgson presenting him with framed copies of his first and last matches at Selhurst Park and a crystal microphone after his final game for 'Match of the Day', CPFC against WBA back in 2018. May God rest his soul. My thoughts go out to all his family and friends. Edited by Willo (23 Feb 2023 10.32am)

Sad news. RIP Mr Motson, you certainly had a distinctive voice and the volume of your pre-match research paid dividends. So glad your last broadcast was at our place.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

Very sad to hear of John Motson's passing. An absolute icon of football commentary and the game in the UK. Not many of the Grandstand football reporters left now. Also gone Gerald Sinstadt Part of my childhood watching the vidiprinter and listening to commentators on the line.

Top bloke and a great and knowledgeable commentator. "In a sense it's a one man show...except there are two men involved, Hartson and Berkovic, and a third man - the Goalkeeper" Just brilliant!

I used to laugh when he would say ... " and it's ironic in fact that ...' and trot out some minor coincidence that was not ironic at all. Can't argue with his quality though - top of his profession. RIP
