This is a cross party moan about local politics.

I just received a pamphlet from the local Labour party along the lines of "Tory government has wrecked this country" we need local Labour councillors etc.

Nothing new about this we get them from the Tories and Lib Dems an others.

I have lived in Beckenham nearly all my life it is true blue, because of this I have never had a Tory councillor or MP knock on my door and introduce themselves, why should they bother. The problem is that none of the other parties do either so in sixty years none of them cared about my vote.

I despair about local politics the Labour pamphlet wasn't about local issues but about national. Okay so Tories bad so what will labour do in Beckenham? And why should I vote for them when they can't be bothered to knock on my door.

My mates live in Lewisham which is deep red, in fairness the Lib Dems do actually make an effort and are often pounding the pavements and knocking on doors.

The reason I vote Tory in local elections is because Bromley is a fairly well run council unlike the basket case next door that is Croydon. In other words Bromley is for the Tories to lose, if any of the other parties want my vote they need to start focusing on local issues and show me they actually care and can do a better job.

If you intend to vote on 4 May, Badger, don't forget to take an approved form of photo ID with you to the polling station.

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

My picture with Fan Zhiyi has recently been replaced by one with Joachim Andersen. Might improve the chance of approval although it makes my 6'1" look about 4'2" which could cause confusion.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

My claim to fame is that when I worked the elections and Bromley was part of the trial I checked people's Id's.

It really is no problem and vastly more people were happy about it that not.

To those who claim it victimises the poor I would respond like this. If you cannot prove your id how did you end up on the electoral roll in the first place.

We did a quick count at the end of the election day rough figures:

- 80%+ showed their photo Driving licence
- Around 5-10% showed their Freedom Pass
- The rest showed passports / bank cards / utility bills.

The day after I applied for a provision Driving Licence (I don't drive) I spoke to several people who used it as a credit card id even though they don't drive.

So why the complaints then? A cynical person might suggest that people who are here illegally or are not entitled to vote in a GE might be on the electoral roll due to the incompetence of the local council and this id check shows them up.

An even more cynical person might suggest that this favours the Labour Party and that local Labour councils are not that keen in looking to weed these people out.

If you are cynical of course.
