I believe he was instrumental in a full England team travelling to Dublin to play Ireland in 1973 after Wales had refused to play. He was with John Pullin, and they called Willie-John Mcbride (an Ulsterman) for advice. Willie-John said that the IRA were more likely to shoot him than any England player and if he didn't go they may as well give up.

The ret as they say is history.....RIP

Proper nice man and a great player.
He ran Sporting Club Dinners a while back - I went to a few.
They were great fun and he was always there as the MC.
He got some top ex-sportsmen and women to speak at them as well.
Shame

The FULL match, Barbarians v New Zealand 1973, should be mandatory viewing for all sports fans. David Duckham - you will never see a performance like it. Imperious.

I still regularly watch my old VHS copy!

Duckham was a great player. It's just a shame that England rugby was in the doldrums when he was at his peak.

I bet they used to get well-oiled after the matches back then.
RIP David.

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

I didn't think anyone would notice but I guess none of us are that young. No disrespect to the great man.

Mrs YT's parents were close friends and neighbours of a lady who inherited a large chunk of the Duckham's Oil fortune. Absolutely minted she was, but she lived relatively modestly.

Are they still around? No idea.I have a feeling they were South London originally.
