Apparently he had a shocker at the Emirates last night and that on top of a poor game when he refereed the Fulham game on Boxing Day at Selhurst Park.
How do these - sometimes - incompetent referees get away with this kind of performance?
One hopes that he will be dropped to the Championship for a few weeks.

I witnessed the game and I don't recognise this description of his performance.

To be honest I have not perused any reports, I watched the game on the television.

I didn't watch the game which is why I said apparently.
9 yellow cards in a game that didn't seem to be that bad?
One penalty which obviously was a penalty - var backed him I might add - but he should be seeing this stuff.
Against Fulham he was as biased as can be and while Mitchell deserved to be sent off, he just couldn't wait to send Tomkpins off for what was not a yellow card offence.

I have heard the argument when a number of 'Yellows' are issued that "It wasn't a dirty game" etc etc.Suffice to say not every 'Yellow' is issued for a robust challenge etc etc !

I certainly do not accept the charge of "Biased" in the Fulham game, he made decisions based on his professional judgement.
I strongly suspect that if one of our players had been on the end of the Mitchell tackle and the opponent was not red-carded the referee would have faced animus.Similarly if one of our players was blocked off when running in the direction of the goal and the opponent was not issued with a Yellow, the referee would have been severely criticised by our supporters.

I watched the last half hour of the Arsenal game and thought he was fine. Newcastle were doing everything possible to waste time and it riled Arteta up who lost his rag - there was a lot of cynical play in the game - hence why most of the bookings were forwards. The handball is never a penalty, he got that right, and the shirt pull should have been a penalty but that falls onto the VAR official - it's always going to be difficult for a referee on the pitch to see every interaction between players in the box at a free kick. The first time I watched it I knew there was a decision to be made from the free kick and even still the first I saw of it was Gabriel on the floor.

On the Fulham game, the Mitchell one is a red card; the first Tomkins one is an unquestionable booking; and the second Tomkins one is naive - he's stepped into Mitrovic with no intention of playing the ball and raised his arm. He knows enough of Mitrovic to know he'll go down and make the most of it and whether it was a booking or not, it's a really silly thing to do on a yellow. Personally, as someone sat close to it, I thought he was going to get booked the second he did it. The frustration out of the Fulham game is that we were crap.

I thought Madley was fine last night too. Newcastle did everything to make the game as ugly as their fans and Arsenal struggled to break them down. Arsenal should have had a penalty for Dan Burns' attempt to remove Gabriel's shirt, but for some reason VAR thought that was ok?! Last night was a good example of why a more accurate added time should be given though (like in the World Cup). Newcastle were so cynical in their time wasting from about the hour mark onwards.

I thought he had a pretty bad game for us against Fulham. Not for the Mitchell sending off but for his general demeanour. If you watch the game back you’ll see a lot of inconsistency in decisions which is what happened last night.

I don’t think he is bias in the same way the the idiot Clattenburg appeared to be, in my opinion. I’m just not convinced he’s good enough. Still at least he also doesn’t kiss arse like MC used to.

Mark was not biased towards any team he made decisions based on his professional judgement.

I have no more comment to make on any sentiments raised on here apropos Mark as the discussion will only disintegrate into a dastardly Willo thread.Forgive me if do not respond.

He is an awful referee, thought that long before Fulham.

Fact is, most are. There are two huge problems in my very, very humble opinion:

1. Supply and demand I guess - just how prolific is the refereeing profession in this country? It's got to be a million miles off of that for footballers. It's not as if everyone dreams of becoming a referee when young and therefore the competition for becoming a qualified referee is high and only the creme de la creme make it through.

2. The 'rules' as they now are. They've been analysed, further convoluted, distorted and become somewhat bonkers. I do feel sorry for referees these days as were I in that seat, I wouldn't have a clue as to what was supposed to be done in various situations. We all know what the rules should be and, despite subjectivity, what would constitute common sense in the game but it's all over the shop now and quite often deviates from common sense/ubiquitous understanding of the game.

I always like to think there's a really formal, professional system for PL referees however my suspicion is a lot of them are still that kid at school, who couldn't even play on the playground, probably supported United and therefore the only way they could be involved was reffing. A slight delusion of grandeur, little understanding of football from a playing/attending perspective and probably quite thick too - Madeley brothers.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!
