DEAD

[Link]
"Former Pope Benedict XVI has died at his Vatican residence, aged 95, almost a decade after he stood down because of ailing health.

He led the Catholic Church for less than eight years until, in 2013, he became the first Pope to resign since Gregory XII in 1415.

Benedict spent his final years at the Mater Ecclesiae monastery within the walls of the Vatican." (BBC)

Has always been of great mystery to me, why the Catholic church promotes its most elderly priests to the position of Pope, when they only have a few miles left on the clock, so to speak.
Still, 10 years in happy retirement was a great effort.

Benedict was the last real pope. Fire & brimstone.

Pope Francis is like a BBC gameshow with bright colours, smiling flags, jolly ribbons, and a doctrine that is barely passable as Christian.

Benedict, Elizabeth & Pele....all up in heaven. Looking down and marvelling at the sh1tshow that came after them.

Rip

There's much to commend that particular viewpoint.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

I presume he's entitled to a military funeral.

A rest can do you the world of good

But in all seriousness, RIP. We're losing a lot of massive figures of late.

On stepping down, he chose to be known as 'Pope emeritus', although I didn't learn that fact until today.

Thanks, although I did know that. TRIVIA - Patrick Stewart is Emeritus Chancellor of The University of Huddersfield. Not a lot of people know that!

I'd just never heard the former Pope called 'emeritus' until today, and then I looked up the fact that he had chosen that description himself ie it wasn't a prescribed title.
