DEAD Another old rocker bites the dust. We seem to be in a spate of them ATM. "Jet Black, the original drummer for 1970s punks The Stranglers, has died aged 84, the band confirmed. The musician, who was born Brian Duffy, was a founding member of the Guildford group, playing on hits Golden Brown, Peaches and No More Heroes. He last performed with them in 2015, announcing his retirement a few years later due to ill health."

Absolutely gutted about this. They have been my favourite band since I was 10 in 1977. Was at their last gig before Hugh Cornwell left them in 1990 at Ally Pally, after having earlier spent the day watching Palace at a pre season friendly at Colchester.

I saw the Stranglers numerous times, but the one that stays in the memory was back in 1978 at the Maison Royale (Jimmy Savile's place in Bournemouth) The Adverts & The Skids were support, the Stranglers had a huge Hell's Angel following.....

Couldn't be sure if they were just winding up 'lefty/anarchic' orthodoxy, but they were certainly the fly in the ointment of the punk era. Jet Black was in his mid-thirties then, and it was great to see him banging the drums in a era that fetishized youth. He owned a lot of ice creams vans too. Edit: just remembered that afternoon at Battersea Park with the strippers on stage. And that loon who looked a bit like JJ who got on stage to dance with them. musically, Jet Black was the foundation, the canvas upon which all the other brilliance happened. such a brilliant drummer was Jet Black, Like a brilliant defender in a football team. Less famous than the glory men, but every bit as essential for a good outcome.

Greenfield, Jet Black, Cornwell.....nearly all the original Stranglers gone.... No More Heroes anymore. The band which now tours should be called 'The Strangler'. And considering JJ is a black belt, its a good title. An interesting side note...... Jet black = Duffy = Black. the irish Celtic word Duff is related to Dubh or Dub...Dublin = Black Pool. Duffy might be Viking, similar to Doyle....Dubh Gall....Black Foreigner. Hence, the Stranglers songs Longships & The Raven...in tribute to the Vikings. Have a look at my comments on Conor Gallagher's surname ( Gall Cabhair....foreign or imported or loaned helper) . Jet Black died with a drumstick in his hand, and has gone up to Valhalla.

Hugh Cornwell is still around isn't he?
