I just don’t get the hype let alone the £100m price tag. What am I missing?

Have to agree on this one. A decent defensive midfielder, but no great passing range, not a lot in the way in surging runs and not many goals. I certainly would want a lot more for the money West Ham seem to think he's worth. But then may be he isn't as no one's been prepared to pay it yet.

Top 5 in the league for tackles and interceptions last year. Ranked first in Europe's top 5 leagues for yards carried with the ball. His role for England is different in that they don't ask him to drive the ball up the pitch as much, but he did it more than anyone in Europe last season at club level, combined with being an exceptional tackler and passer. Struggle to see how anyone doesn't rate him - he's exceptional at nearly every part of the game.

He wouldn't be any where close to 100M if he'd decided to pull on an Ireland shirt. Therein lies the answer.

It's pretty bizarre that we as Palace fans are so fixated on the '£100m' - it's exactly the approach we took with Zaha where you slap a massive price tag on a player in the hope it puts people off bidding.

I think he is a terrific player, perfect for that holding midfield role. My brother, who has a particular distaste for WHU, kept commenting in one of our games (cannot recall which one now) every time Rice was in the 'right place/right time'. It happened astonishingly frequently. He's got a physical presence, comfortable on or moving with the ball and a good 'footballing brain'. I think we are blessed to have both him and Bellingham in the middle as they are both superb players. Look at the alternatives, would you rather Kalvin Phillips there? Not even close to DR. £100mil is about the going rate there days. Young, being English probably helps, proven PL + Int'l experience and a very, very good player. I must admit I was disinclined to jump on the bandwagon when he emerged for various reasons but the evidence has been demonstrated quite clearly IMHO.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

I recognise Declan Rice's strengths and appreciate the qualities he brings to both W.Ham and England. He played as a centre-half in the Chelsea Academy and it is the model of plausibility that he could well be deployed in this position on a regular basis much later in his career.

You might as well start a thread on virtually any footballer on the premise that their 'price tag' is ridiculous. The price of a player - like the price of a property or a business or a tin of beans - is whatever the buyer is prepared to pay and the seller is prepared to accept.

Completely overrated his pass completion is so good as its about 5 yards back or side, when we beat them three games ago you hardly knew he has playing, and we are not the greatest midfield.
“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn |

Ranked 7th best midfielder in the league for progressive passes completed last season. Completed 203 out of 258 attempted long balls which is a completion rate of 78.7% - yet another stat he finds himself in the top 10 in the country for. Are we really going to argue that a guy with these type of numbers is not a complete midfielder? - Top 1 for ball carrying

Yeah, yeah but Lanzo has been spoilt by the quality of Luka and Kouyaté.

Palace midfielders last season: Conor Gallagher - 60 progressive passes completed / 74.9% pass completion James McCarthur - 59 progressive passes completed / 82.2% pass completion Cheikou Kouyate - 39 progressive passes completed / 81.6% pass completion vs Declan Rice - 147 progressive passes completed / 90.4% pass completion Edited by EverybodyDannsNow (05 Dec 2022 3.46pm)
