December 16th sees the 50th Anniversary of Palace beating Man Utd 5-0. My 1st ever football match. Watched it from the back of the Whitehorse on my dad's shoulders. 50 years of ups and downs, joy and misery on the Palace rollercoaster.

Don Rogers scored a brace, as did Paddy Mulligan, and Alan Whittle scored the other goal.
Alan Whittle is the uncle of Everton midfielder Tom Davies.

Frank O'Farrell was removed of his duties a few days after this match, with Man Utd in the bottom reaches of the league.

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

It is the game that stands out for all Palace fans of a certain age.
It had all the ingredients of a special occasion ... a pre-Christmas match, a big crowd and great atmosphere, a murky afternoon with the floodlights on, big name opposition and a rousing 5 goal performance from Palace.

Add to that a couple of memorable goals - Don Rogers pushing the ball to one side of Stepney then running round the other side of him to pick the ball up and score (Pele tried it but failed!) and that deft chip from Whittle.

It is a match I always include when listing the top 5 Palace games I have attended.

A marvellous day.
Wasn't it Alan Whittle's debut?

An article about him playing in Iran. Like the rest of us he's changed a bit!

Don Rogers was such an elegant and graceful player who seemed to float around the pitch. In those days pitches were a sea of mud, everyone is covered head to foot in mud, yet the Don was always spotless, never ever went to ground.

He would have been a mega star in todays modern game, one of my favourite players of all time.

Magic!
Sadly for me, it was played 6 months before I moved to London to work and before I started to watch and finally support the Palace, so I didn't get to see this live. I just got to see the drop from 2nd to 3rd etc.
