I can't stay on here so I'll tell you if you don't know.

But it's poignant.

On the night of 30th November 1936, The Crystal Palace burnt down .

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

My Dad used to tell us about seeing the flames from his aunt's house at the top of Benhill Road in Sutton. I believe the interior of the Bethnal Green Museum is the only remaining part of the original Hyde Park structure.

My great grandfather and his brother worked at the Palace.

Uncle Sid was a joiner employed to build the exhibition stands. He saw the fire from his home in Addiscombe and it badly affected him. He was never the same after the fire.

I had a large chunk of glass many years ago that he salvaged from the site. I regret to say I didn't think it was worth hanging on to, so I no longer have that little piece of history.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Mum & Dad stood on the railway bridge at Avenue Road to watch the Palace burn down, went home, had a shag and I was the result......

My dad talked about seeing it burn - he cycled down to watch. The Palace would have been unlikely to have survived the blitz anyway as all around that area was heavily bombed.

Mum & her sister used to talk about sitting on the hill at the Alexandra Palace during the war watching the doodlebugs flying overhead, I guess if the Crystal Palace fire was during the war
(instead of earlier) they would have seen it from there too.

My dad watched it from a bus going home after playing football. Don't know where but he lived in Peckham so I guess it was round there.

Kids, tired of being bothered by your pesky parents?
Then leave home, get a job & pay your own bills, while you still know everything.
