I noticed that the SPL signed a new 5 year TV deal with Sky which is £30m pa spread between the 12 clubs.

It just shows the vast gulf between Scottish and English football. Palace get around £120m pa and some of the higher clubs will get £150m pa on their own.

I'm not sure if this deal is even on a par with the Football League? It looks like Championship clubs get more.

The one interesting point is that SPL clubs are allowed to pay per view 5 games per season. I suspect Rangers and Celtic would love to increase this number.

My guess is the TV companies are looking for cheaper alternatives to fill screen hours on their sports channel offering -
The price to be a PL & CL football provider goes up time after time & it seems that each year there are more companies bidding for a slice of that action, ultimately not all of those TV channels can be bid winners & not all subscribers will be ready to pay the top dollar subscriptions required to watch all of the action -(often involving having to subscribe to more than one provider)

Even more so in the current economic climate -

I can see the day when each PL club controls their own TV rights, of course this will favour the elite clubs.

I would be happy to pay Palace to watch live games at 3pm on a Saturday rather than some dodgy stream but I suspect financially we would be worse off.

I wonder what the next TV deal will look like, the current Sky one was more or less the same amount as the previous. I think the Amazon deal was a waste of time for Amazon only being able to show games 2/3 times a year.

I suspect the next amount of the deal will also be flat people are not going to have the money.

Simon Jordan has suggested the the PL bypass Sky altogether and indeed the technology for that is simple enough. I think some sports in the US have already done this.

Change is coming whether it is good or bad us punters will no doubt pay more.

I can certainly see that there is likely going to come a time when there will be a push to keep this revenue in house & clubs stream through their own TV channels -

Yes it favours the rich -
Each club will (at least in the beginning) only have access / screening rights to their own home games - somehow going forward there would need to be a deal in place for away teams to be able to buy the screening & sell it to subscribers on their own network -
Someone needs to overturn this 3pm Saturday screening rule -
Presumably somewhere in the - I want to be a PL club handbook - their are rules that would have to be navigated / maybe even have to expire before that can be done -
Probably every club in a division would have to agree to embark on doing it at the same time otherwise the whole thing just gets disjointed -
Somehow international broadcasting rights deals would have to be navigated or allowed to expire -for example I struggle to see BEIN sports (Qatar) allowing that to happen without throwing serious money at the challenge, enough money to make it not worth the clubs going to the bother of changing the status quo -

Just a few thoughts -

I wouldn't pay 50p to watch a Scottish game on TV. I presume the big draw are Celtic in Ireland.

If Scottish football came free with Palace TV I still wouldn't watch it - ( unless we had a loan player involved or some other tangible connection)

Was thinking about the past, and in my recollection, a lot of fans used to have a kind of Scottish second team (perhaps third) that they would follow. There were obvious connotations with Rangers and Celtic, I used to watch out for Stranraer - just 'cos they're the underdog, a bit like supporting Palace - but obviously nowhere near as good. Look at their crowds - it's at Whyteleafe kind of level. I don't bother following much anymore. The whole league seems to simply revolve around never ending Celtic Rangers derbies. The epitome of boring and foregone conclusion.

I only go to a couple of games a year and they're really just a £20 interruption in the days drinking. The crowds are too small to get any real atmosphere and those that are there have quite a fatalistic attitude - they know the games aren't great and go out of habit. Fair play though there are a few who go to every game which can involve a lot of travelling.

I live in Fife but I've got a mate who's an Ayr fan so when they come over I'll go to Dunfermline or Raith Rovers with him. Not East Fife though. Even I draw the line at going to Methil.
