Probably a question for older fans on here. Watching the TV programme on channel 4 last week about the academy. Last week they focused on a young keeper (good luck to him) This set me thinking.

Who was the last goalkeeper we produced that went on to make a first team appearance? I’m thinking David Fry back in the 80’s or can anyone think of someone else.

I’m sure Andy Woodman was an academy player, he was reserve keeper but don’t know if he actually played

Trivial fact - Palace used to win 5-1 at least once a season, maybe next season?

I can't answer your post, but I did watch the programme that featured the young lad with the stutter, and, like you, I hope he makes it one day. Seemed a bright, pleasant prospect.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

It must be difficult for young goalkeepers because clubs tend to stick to proven performers who are first choice for years and they don't generally get injured so chances are limited without moving. Whereas a manager might put on a young outfield player who is able to hold onto his place it's much harder or an inexperienced keeper.
No idea what the answer is but how many Premier clubs have had homegrown goalkeepers? When they have the whole world to choose from they're surely more likely to buy in a replacement.
As others have said good luck to him.

Andy Woodman was a graduate of the CPFC Academy but I have no recollection of him making his first team debut.
I am of the opinion that he once used to run a soccer school in Warlingham.

He's currently manager of Bromley.
He co-wrote a book called Woody & Nord about his friendship with Gareth Southgate which mentioned Southgate's Nord nickname was because Wally Downes thought he sounded posh and Dennis Norden was the poshest person they could think of.

He never made a first team appearance. He said he was so bad that in training wich ever side he was on got a two goal headstart.

Listen to "under the cosh" podcast with Andy Woodman some of the funiest stories ever. It's a great listen
