Patrick has got a dilemma with our strikers, Edouard needs to put his chances away, but can’t, whilst Mateta comes off the bench regularly and only needs a sniff and it’s in the back of the net. That was a great cross from Tyrick yesterday, but Mateta still had a lot to do as the centre back was initially closer to the ball. Does big Pat start with Mateta or Edouard?

I dont know the answer but I coudnt help thinking Edouard must have been sitting on the bench yesterday thinking "where was a cross like that all the time he was on the field" 2 minutes after being substituted & the cross of the match falls for his replacement -

I would start with Mateta. One thing I've noticed about Edouard is a lot of chances he gets, he never seems to just put his foot through it and they just sort of roll to the keeper. I don't know whether that's to do with his ability or the chances he gets but I feel like he does it every game. Whilst I agree Edouard may well be annoyed he didn't get service like Mateta's goal, I'm not convinced he would of been in the right place or battled for the ball like Mateta does

I think you’ve answered your own question, it’s a no brainer really

There has been much discussion about Mateta and Edouard and no doubt plenty more to come. Neither fill me with confidence, but out of the two, I prefer Mateta for his movement off the ball as well as his better finishing. As others have said about Edouard, he often demonstrates a clumsy first touch when it often appears (from my armchair I admit) that he should just boot it. Both are young and still finding their feet, literally, in the Prem, so plenty of scope for improvement. But we can't put all the blame for missed chances on those two because Ayew and Hughes missed a couple of good chances yesterday. Looking on the bright side, all are an improvement on the slow, ponderous, lazy and waste of money that was Benteke.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

More importantly, we are creating the chances. With Edouard I think it's a confidence thing. Same with Ayew, had a good chance but tamely side footed for the keeper.

Can still see a lot of rotation between the 2 as the manager clearly doesn't have a favourite. Next game neither might start as per Liverpool game even with Mateta netting yesterday.

Edouard wouldn't have got on the end of that cross I’m inclined to agree. I have asked previously whether Benteke had become somewhat removed from an identity as a ‘goalscorer’ with other responsibilities as a sole striker and am starting to ask the same questions of Edouard. He no doubt contributes to the unit and is far from useless but he looks to be drifting further from what should be his primary objective. Mateta for me still seems far more aware of that and therefore better retention of an instinctive desire to stick it in the back of the net. Would be beyond ludicrous for me to begin assuming, questioning then challenging PV’s tactical thinking but as a fan I feel far more optimistic Mateta will actually get on the end of anything let alone finish it.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

Correct, he is Benteke2 A bit Harsh on Edouard, he’s certainly not lazy like Benteke, he just looks like he needs a goal to get a bit of confidence back This was always my biggest issue with Benteke though, he never attacked the ball in the penalty area, fans who defended him said we didn’t play to his strengths, but even when a cross did come over, if it wasn’t put on a plate for him, he never had that fire in his belly to attack the ball or anticipate where a cross might go ala Mateta v Villa
