Surprised not been posted yet. Just a bit (a year) before my time of following Palace but older friends have told me of the legend that was 'Yogi':

Agreed was just about to post the same. Who remembers little Palace with Yogi putting 5 past a United team full of big stars

I have just posted on the nostalgia page saying that the 5-1 win over Sheffield United, in which Yogi was unstoppable, in December 1971, was actually more impressive than the 5-0 thrashing of Man Utd.

At the time Sheffield had had a great start to the season and were riding high - the previous week they had turned over Ipswich 7-0. On the other hand, Man Utd. were in very poor form and sliding toward the bottom of the table when we played them a year later in December 1972.

His time with Palace was brief but memorable. If you saw it you will never forget that thunderous shot of his from outside the area that almost burst the net.

RIP Yogi.

As a youngster I remember him signing and I think Willie Wallace as well. I was so excited we signed them. RIP

What sad news.
I remember 'Yogi' with great affection and recall his brace at home to Sheff Utd in a 5-1 victory, one being an absolute 'belter'.
My thoughts are with his family and friends.
RIP.

Yes that's right it's just that Man U were and I guess still are such a big name and in those days we definitely were not. I used to go to most games but missed the 5-0 beating of Utd as I was playing myself, can't remember where but I do remember someone in the changing room after the game telling me Palace had beaten Utd 5-0. I thought for quite a while that they were having me on.

I was at that game, think that belter against Sheffield Utd won goal of the season on MOTD. Picked up knee injury and was never the same player after.

RIP, another great player from my youth passed on.

Imprinted on my brain his performances against ManU and SheffU particularly.

No idea what happened to him but always remember that great atmosphere.

RIP Yogi Hughes.

I remember how excited the crowd were in the he Sheffield Utd game when everyone saw how big and good he was. If he hadn't have got injured he and Don Rogers would have been a real handful, one big, one fast but both skilful and with an eye for goal.
Older Celtic fans still talk about a match on a frozen pitch when he played in bumper boots and was unstoppable.
He ran a pub after retirement.

That was when i started supporting Palace my brother in law took me , I do remember Hughes and Wallace coming to us , pity we didnt get them both year or 2 earlier , that way when we thrashed Man utd it could have been for top half of the lge , John Hughes was a great player at celtic and a very good player at palace always seemed to have time on the ball , wish i had seen him more live than TV highlights RIP Yogi
